Some Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fans are convinced that an Esquie boss fight is coming to the hit game. The theory is based on a recent social media tweak, as well as Sandfall Interactive's confirmation that it hasn't Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 content.
In early October 2025, Sandfall and publisher Kepler Interactive announced that their blockbuster RPG surpassed 5 million sales. To mark the occasion, the companies said that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gets a free DLC update that introduces a variety of content, including a new location and boss fights.
Spooky Esquie Artwork Sparks New Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Boss Fight Theories
While no bosses were mentioned in the announcement, some fans are convinced that Esquie will be one of them after an eerie depiction of the lovable giant appeared on the game's official social media channels. The move sparked speculation that a darker take on Esquie – whether in the form of a mood swing or an “evil twin” character – is coming with the free update. Sandfall has yet to provide concrete details on how the DLC will expand Clair Obscur: Expedition 33s managerial lineup, which makes educated guesses difficult, but also leaves all possibilities on the table for now.
There is a simpler explanation for the ghostly Esquie artwork
There's also an easier way to interpret the latest development: with the Halloween season in full swing, the avatar change could be a playful nod to the calendar rather than a cryptic clue to an upcoming boss. The free one Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the update doesn't yet have a release date or even a release window, making it unlikely to launch before 2026. So it may be too soon for Sandfall and Kepler to start teasing content beyond what's already been said in the initial announcement.
Would an Esquie Boss Fight even work?
Esquie has been widely hailed as the breakout star of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Shaped like a vintage wine bottle, the gentle giant quickly endeared himself to fans through a mix of poignant and humorous quotes, all brought to life by a memorable performance by French actor Maxence Cazorla. Several characters in the game refer to him as an extremely powerful being, and players themselves witness his usefulness after he joins the party and helps it move.
There is therefore precedent in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lore for Esquie to serve as a formidable boss fight, should Sandfall choose to go in that direction. And while there doesn't seem to be any narrative reason for the expeditions to fight him, some of the game's existing boss encounters prove that its writers are willing and able to justify clashes between allies under certain circumstances.
