Bruce Banner Deck Synergies
-
Bruce Banner is a wild card. You leave him on board for a chance to get a 12-Power card at the cost of two.
-
Sunspot, Hulk and She-Hulk benefit from your unused energy.
-
Luna Snow provides extra energy to play cards on the curve without giving up Bruce Banner.
-
High-Evolutionary activates the hidden abilities of Misty, Cyclops and Hulk.
-
Magic extends the match, so you're more likely to get Hulks from Bruce Banners.
-
Frigga helps copy Bruce Banner for better transformation odds.
-
Armor is your tech card. She protects Hulks and other big drops against enemy tech cards like Shang-Chi.
-
Infinaut is your reserve profit condition. By skipping turn five, you can potentially play both She-Hulk and The Infinaut – assuming Luna Snow's extra energy is available.
How to play Bruce Banner effectively
If you plan to add Bruce Banner to your decks, keep these tips in mind:
1. Increase your odds by duplicating him.
A single Bruce Banner on the board is not reliable, as his chances of transforming into the Hulk are minimal. If you've played him before, you know he's often reluctant to Hulk out. By duplicating Bruce Banner and having two or more on the board, you can greatly increase your odds of getting at least one Hulk after a few rounds. (Although it's also worth noting that going that route costs you real estate and can clog lanes.)
2. Protect his lane.
Bruce Banner is an easy target for enemy tech cards, so you need to protect him. Cards like Armor, Caiera, and Cosmo are great options to protect him. Choose support cards that not only defend Bruce, but also synergize well with the rest of your deck.
3. Play him as early as possible.
The longer Bruce Banner is on the board, the better your chances of seeing him transform into the Hulk. While the conversion rate stays at 25% per round, the cumulative probability increases with each turn. Playing Bruce early and extending the match with Magik can give you more opportunities to unleash free Hulks.
How to counter Bruce Banner
Bruce is not hard to counter. Red Guardian works well during his pre-Hulk phase, while Shang-Chi can handle him after he transforms. Lady Deathstrike can also take out Bruce with the right timing. However, the best counterplay is often just to wait. If Bruce doesn't transform, there's no reason to counter him—a 2-Cost, 1-Power Bruce Banner left on the board is more of a liability to your opponent than a threat to you.
Is Bruce Banner worth it?
The short answer is no. Bruce Banner may have seemed promising at launch, but early stats show him to be a mediocre card at best. You are likely to lose more matches depending on Bruce than you win. Also, your decks are better without more RNG.
The only players who can enjoy Bruce are casual. If you don't care about competitive vitality and just want fun gameplay, he can be an entertaining addition to your collection. He'll have you biting your nails hoping that 25% chance pays off for a game-winning Hulk. If not, skip this week's Spotlight Cache and grab Groot & Raccoon instead.
