ESRB
M for adults 17+ due to blood, intense violence, partial nudity, suggestive themes

Heavily influenced by the bizarre horror-thriller style Twin Peaks, Deadly premonition features an FBI agent named Francis Morgan investigating a gruesome murder. Where most horror games stick to a mostly linear path, Deadly Premonition is one of the few that presents an open world to explore.

The open world mechanic allowed players to explore, complete quests, unlock cosmetics for Morgan, and take care of the character's needs. Things like food and sleep are made important, otherwise Morgan begins to lose health. Add supernatural enemies and a villain known as the Raincoat Killer; Deadly premonition is unlike most games out there.

6 SAW

Detective Tapp returns in a sequel to the film

  • Developer: Zombie Studios
  • Release date: October 6, 2009
  • System: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
  • Genre: Survival Horror

Rarely are games directly based on horror movies good, though SAW was a rare gem in that subgenre. It helps people who worked on SAW movies helped make the game, including Tobin Bell reprising his role as John Kramer, AKA Jigsaw. Also, rather than trying to adapt the events of the films, SAW is a sequel to the first film with an original story.

IN SAWthe obsessed detective Tapp, previously played by Danny Glover, is the protagonist who is forced into a gauntlet of traps and puzzles. Playing as a legacy character helped create SAW feels true to the movies, especially since it gets the visual style of the movies almost perfectly, even down to the quick edits and transitions.

4 The evil within

The spiritual successor to Resident Evil warps the mind

As The evil within begins, players control police detective Sebastian Castellanos, arriving in a strange location to investigate a call. From there it takes off with Castellanos diving head first into a world of bloody and psychological horror that pays homage to several horror films of the past.

In many ways, Sebastian is the quintessential gritty middle-aged detective character, but as the story progresses and more is revealed, The evil within becomes a gem of a horror game. It helps that it was developed by the creator of Resident Evil game, take what he did so well in the past and bring something new to the table.

3 Resident Evil 2 (2019)

The remake makes Leon Kennedy even better

The original Resident Evil 2 is a classic, but even hardcore Resident Evil fans agreed that a remake with modern visuals and a third-person perspective created an undeniably superior game. There are two characters with two different stories: Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. Leon is the new recruit to the Raccoon City Police Department, and he joined on the worst possible day.

Resident Evil: Every Game Leon Kennedy appears in

Leon S. Kennedy is not only known for his roundhouse kicks. He is a staple in Resident Evil and features in many games from the series.

When Raccoon City becomes ground zero from the T virus infection, Leon and Claire must fight their way out of the police department. An abandoned police station as a new officer adds to the creepiness while making it one of the most memorable locations in the series, especially when chased by zombies, Lickers and the enigmatic Mr. The X-creature created by Umbrella.

2 Alan Wake 2

A new character brings more perspective to the bizarre adventure

Not all highly anticipated sequels live up to expectations, however Alan Wake 2 surpassed them and became a huge award-winning success. Remedy Entertainment took what they did so well in the first game and cranked it up to create a cerebral horror experience with the titular author inspired by Stephen King.

Alan Wake isn't the only playable character though, as the game introduces Saga Anderson, an FBI profiler who gets completely wrapped up in the dark and bizarre world of Alan Wake 2. It mixes sci-fi, fantasy and psychological elements together for a sequel that most would say is better than the original.

1 Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Leon returns in one of the best remakes ever made

Leon Kennedy made a triumphant return in Resident Evil 4sent to rural Spain to find the missing president's daughter from a sect of humans under a new strain of virus. The remake of the beloved horror game retains the more action-packed style of the original while adding the horror and suspense of before Resident Evil remakes done so well.

From the chainsaws to the regenerators, the Las Plagas infected keep players on their toes because they aren't traditional zombies. They can use weapons, use tactics, and have more abilities than just scratch and bite, but thankfully Leon continues to be one of the best protagonists after the Raccoon City incident.
