Ball x Pit currently outsells Borderlands 4 and its indie rival Megabonk

2025 has been an incredible year for indie games, whether it's the likes of Hollow Knight: Silksong we've come to expect, or welcome surprises like Blue Prince. It turns out that adding the welcome surprise category isn't quite clear yet, as a day after launch Ball x Pit has shot up the Steam charts.

At the time of writing, Kenny Sun's indie hit is the sixth best-selling game on Steam, although it has fallen slightly from its peak as there was a point where Ball x Pit even outsold EA Sports FC 26. An impressive feat wherever you are in the world, but even more impressive when you consider that I'm based in the UK, so the list is based on Sm. series formerly known as FIFA.

While it may have dropped just short of the latest installment in the EA Sports FC franchise, Ball x Pit is still outselling some other very big names. It charts 11 places higher than Borderlands 4, and is significantly higher than Hades 2. Sure, neither of these games launched yesterday like Ball x Pit, but both have the cache that you'd expect them to outsell a new indie game that not many people had heard of until now so soon after their respective releases.

Ball x Pit is even outselling Megabonk right now, another indie hit that came out of nowhere recently.

What makes Ball x Pit's early success even more impressive is the fact that Steam's charts are based on revenue, and the new indie game is significantly cheaper than some of the games it's competing against for sales. Ball x Pit is $14.99, which is significantly cheaper than Borderlands 4, even with a 20 percent discount on Gearbox's latest game, despite Randy Pitchford claiming the game wouldn't go on sale until well after launch.

Ball x Pit is also not exclusive to PC. It's also available on consoles, including the Nintendo Switch, and was added to Game Pass on day one. After being sucked into it on launch day, I can see why it's selling so well right out of the gate. Its premise is simple and complex at the same time, and it's the epitome of an “oh, go on then, just one more run”.

While it's selling well on Steam, it doesn't have enough concurrent players to catch up with the likes of Silksong and Megabonk yet. Eight indie games have broken the 100,000 CCU mark on Steam this year, more than any other year. Let's see if Ball x Pit can gain enough traction to become nine.
