Nintendo has yet to officially announce the next main line The Legend of Zelda game, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from becoming unusually active in May 2026. Between claims of a Ocarina of time remake for Nintendo Switch 2 and a possible new 2D Zelda game that is targeting a 2027 launch, there could be some big things in store for fans of the franchise.
For now, however, each new The Legend of Zelda Gambling claims should still be treated as a rumor and nothing more. Nintendo's currently known Switch 2 lineup already includes games such as Star Fox, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Splatoon Raidersand Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weavebut nothing new Zelda the game has been officially revealed. That said, the latest confirmation of Star Fox have made a special one Zelda the rumor is much harder to ignore, especially since that game was reportedly part of the same larger leak mentioned Ocarina of time will return on Switch 2.

The Legend of Zelda will dominate with 3 major releases
The Legend of Zelda fans have a lot to look forward to in the next year, with 3 distinct releases in the pipeline.
Ocarina of Time Remake is the biggest Zelda rumor right now
The most prominent Zelda rumors circulating right now claim so The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is getting a full remake for the Nintendo Switch 2. This rumor took off earlier this year when leaker NateTheHate claimed in a video on his YouTube channel that Nintendo was preparing a Ocarina of time remake for the second half of the year. At the time, the rumor was interesting yet easy to keep at arm's length, like Zelda fans have been burned many times by reports of classic games making a return to modern hardware.
What has changed, however, is the context surrounding the leak. NateTheHate also claimed that a new Star Fox the game was coming to Switch 2, and Nintendo has now officially revealed Star Fox for a release on June 25, 2026. Judging by what was shown below Star Fox directly, the new game is essentially a remake of Star Fox 64 and includes upgraded graphics, redesigned characters, online multiplayer, mouse controls and even support for the N64 controller. It does not necessarily confirm Ocarina of time the rumor, but it means at least a large part of the leak that included Star Fox has now been validated.
While still nothing more than a rumor, the timing actually makes sense. Ocarina of time is one of the most important games in Nintendo's history, Zelda40th anniversary was earlier this year, and live-action The Legend of Zelda the film is currently slated for theatrical release on May 7, 2027. In other words, Nintendo has every reason to keep the franchise in the spotlight, even if it doesn't actually prove that a Ocarina of time remake is indeed underway.
The latest leak claims that Ocarina of Time is being rebuilt from the ground up
There is another element Ocarina of time remake rumor coming from Nash Weedle, who has reportedly claimed that the alleged remake is more ambitious than a simple HD remaster. The game is rumored to be rebuilt from the ground up, have been in development since 2022, may involve Monolith Soft, and may be revealed during a Nintendo Direct in June before launching in late 2026.
To the same statement is the idea that there are rumours Ocarina of time remake can be divided into two parts, in a similar way as Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, where one part revolves around Child Link and the other around Adult Link. However, this is what claims fans should take with a grain of salt more than the rest, as releasing the alleged remake in that format could ruin the experience, as the original game is built around the relationship between the two time periods. Since Nintendo are fully aware of it, this part of the rumor feels highly unlikely.
A new 2D Zelda game could be planned for 2027
The other major Zelda the rumor points in a completely different direction. Instead of a new remake, this one suggests that Nintendo and Grezzo could develop a new 2D Zelda game for the Switch 2. This claim also comes from Nash Weedle, who mentioned the game in a recent podcast and said it was codenamed “Bernard”. Richard and Edward are reportedly code names given to Link's Awakening remake and Echo of wisdomwhich has led to further speculation, especially regarding the game's protagonist.
There have been suggestions that the next 2D Zelda the game may feature Ganondorf in a large playable or protagonist-like role. It would obviously be a big departure for the series, especially after Echo of wisdomwhich already broke tradition by putting Zelda in the main role. However, this appears to be an assumption based on the game's rumored codename, Bernard. The idea is that Grezzo code-named each project after a European king, with Richard, a king known for his courage, being the code name for Link's Awakening and Edward, a king known for his wisdom, which is the code name for Echo of wisdom.
With Link possessing the Triforce of Courage and Zelda possessing the Triforce of Wisdom, that leaves Ganondorf, who frequently possesses the Triforce of Power throughout the series. King Bernard of Italy was not known for absolute power, but he was a dispossessed king who rebelled against an imperial order of succession. Only that could suit one Zelda the story interested in Ganondorf as king before he becomes the monster that Hyrule knows him to be.
Zelda's coming years could be busier than they look
The reason these rumors are getting so much attention is that Zeldas official future is unusually open right now. The tears of the kingdom launched in 2023, Echo of wisdom followed in 2024, and live-action The Legend of Zelda the movie is slated for 2027. Between these milestones, the Nintendo Switch 2 still needs its first big one Zelda moment.
That moment can be a Ocarina of time remake, a new 2D game or something Nintendo has managed to keep completely hidden. For now, it Ocarina of time remake is the rumor with the most momentum, largely because Star Fox connection. 2D Zelda the rumor is certainly interesting, but it is more cryptic and less concrete. Until Nintendo makes an official announcement, the safest conclusion is that Zelda fans have plenty to watch, but nothing to rely on yet. Still, it feels like a big Switch 2 Zelda the reveal could be on the horizon, as the timing feels almost perfect.
