All Luffy's shapes, ranked by design

Summary

  • The design of Luffy's new forms in one piece improves his strength and unique abilities dramatically.

  • Some transformations, such as the nightmare Luffy and Gear 4 Bounce Man, stand out for their threatening and powerful performances.

  • Luffy's Gear 5 design, introduced in his fight against Kaido, is visually creative, inspiring and retains its odd personality.

Since Luffy can twist and distort his body in any way he can imagine thanks to his devil fruit, it means that he can become extra creative when he adopts a new form that improves his strength and sustainability in a struggle. It is always a huge moment in the anime and mangas community when Luffy releases a whole new form. But even though it is easy to initially focus on their strength and new abilities, their patterns also go a long way to make these transformations memorable and unique.

Author Eiichiro Oda has cooked up some incredible patterns for Luffy's many forms throughout A bit story. They all differ when it comes to overall details and quality, with some are much greater stand-outs than others. With Gear 5, which is now a permanent addition to Lffy's arsenal of power ups, it seems just appropriate to reflect on each of these forms from a strict visual point of view, to see where Luffy looks best.

Nightmare Luffy

A cartoon cinematic monstrous look that only pops up for a fight

  • First look: section 370

Nightmare Luffy is a form that only appeared once under the main character's intense battle with Gecko Moria – a formidable, albeit lazy, a member of Shichibukai. To get enough to put on Moria's submissive giant known as Orz Jr., Luffy absorbs hundreds of shadows. The whole body grows into cartoon proportions and his skin turns blue to refer to the classic monster Frankenstein.

It feels like ODA could have packed even more horror references in this design, but it is still a unique look for Luffy. It is really threatening because of its size, along with the average scowl that never leaves Luffy's face. The addition of the sword on Luffy's back is a nice touch, along with the strap that extends across the chest, which makes him look like a real undead adventurer.

6

Gear 3

A basic but memorable form where Luffy shows its creativity

  • First look: section 304

When Luffy starts blowing his finger, it is an immediate sign that the opponent should start preparing an escape plan, as this is the signal that he is releasing the devastating Gear 3. Gear 3 is extremely strong and can deal with serious damage to Like Rob Lucci. But from a visual perspective, Oda decided to keep this shape pleasant and simple.

A bit: 8 best designed straw hat shapes, ranked

Some members of the Straw Hat crew have acquired new forms throughout their adventures, whereby these were among the best when it comes to overall design.

Blowing Luffy's hand up to such a astonishing size is a fun way to show the potential of his rubber body. It also shows his creativity in being able to elicit such an experimental form that can get the job done without being too flashy or over the top.

5

Gear 4 Tank Form

This hilarious but formidable tank form Bolsters Luffy's defense

  • First look: section 806

Luffy experimented with his Gear 4 mode so much that he could eventually separate it into several sub-forms, one of which was his defensive tank form. When he activates this technique, Luffy expands until he becomes a giant round rubber ball. The addition of the red flames from Haki that reaches his body makes him look more like a fiery rage, which makes an odd but interesting design.

Many fans also appreciate this form as one of the few who showcase Luffy's silly side and let him act a little more easier while still emphasizing his underlying force. Luffy may not throw out this form much today, but it still blew people away when it first appeared against Cracker.

4

Gear 2

Luffy's first real power up brought small but effective visual additions

  • First appearance: section 272

While Gear 2 does not change Luffy's appearance too much, the small additions are added, such as Luffy's boiling red skin and the steam originating from his body, perfectly this pirate's enormous strength, even at this early point in the story. When you assume this form, Luffy always has a deadly serious look on the face and adds a scary factor. This is one of the many reasons why it has become such a iconic transformation.

The steam that rises from Luffy's body in Gear 2 is a subtle but easy way to emphasize Luffy's bubbling power that rises to the surface and invokes fear in the eyes of some bad luck enough to resist him.

3

Gear 4 Boundman

Cool details

  • First appearance: Section 726

When Luffy was pressed to its border with the scary Shichibukai, known as Doflamingo, he revealed his long -awaited gear 4; Specifically, Hans Boundman -Form. This form surprised each fan with not only its strength, but also its design. With its bulk arms covered with black and red Haki, and the chest is widened with a red fire pattern at his collar, Luffy looks epic in this form.

8 scariest conversions in Dragon Ball, ranked

Transformations are synonymous with Dragon Ball, and although many of them are extremely epic, some are also completely scary.

This was not the only time Luffy used Boundman in the story, which makes sense considering how much it strengthens his total speed, which allowed him to drive circles around even the toughest opponents. From a design perspective, it is one of Luffy's best and no doubt the most recognition of all his transformations.

2

Gear 4 Snake man

Combines strength with speed, resulting in an epic design

  • First appearance: section 870

If Luffy wants to add a little more speed and accuracy to his attacks, he can assume a snake man. This form sees him narrow down while still retaining the huge strength offered by Bounce Man. As a result, his arms are still covered by deep red haki, but a noticeable change is Luffy's hair, which begins to float in the air and shows how light and smooth he has become.

Gear 4 Snakeman feels like the most god-like Luffy ever looked before he reaches Gear 5. The disclosure is considered one of the most iconic moments in the story after the TimeSkip section. It is an incredible design that does a good job of making Luffy look scary, so much that even Katakuri was surprised.

1

Tool 5

Changes just enough Luffy's appearance while retaining core features

  • First appearance: section 1072

The warmly expected Gear 5 did not disappoint when it first arrived during Luffy's last meeting with the dangerous Kaido. The viewers got to see a streamlined but creative design that is fed into Luffy's silly and fun personality. With Luffy's hair that turns white and takes the shape of puffy clouds, along with the white circular shape that surrounds his body, it presents the protagonist as a kind of other proper deity that oozes all.

While Luffy's appearance goes through a fairly review, he still retains some of his most important functions to remind fans that it is still at the heart of the transformation – especially the cheesy smile, which is even wider than normal. There is no doubt that, even though they have been introduced so far in the story, will remember as one of the most visually interesting and creative designs in the series.
