The winter 2025 anime season is underway, and one of its most anticipated premieres is an original anime by MAPPA, the animation production studio behind several popular anime titles, including Attack on Titan: The Final Season, JUJUTSU KAISEN, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, Dorohedoro and CHAINSAW MAN. ZENSHU follows a genius young animator who is in a rut after the resounding success of his directorial debut, and the series' teaser trailers built up quite a bit of interest for the show, which premiered on Sunday, January 5.
the title”ZENSHU” may sound cool to non-Japanese speakers, but won't have much meaning, but the connection between the anime's title and its content is quite interesting, but also quite straightforward.
FAMILY
Zenshu: A Millenial Burnout Isekai Adventure
Are pampered clams the secret to unlocking your potential? (No. No, they're not.) Natsuko Hirose is about to find out in Zenshu's series premiere.
What is ZENSHU all about?
Not just another Isekai
ZENSHU follows Natsuko Hirose, a young woman who became an animator straight out of high school, and who very quickly climbed the ranks to become the director of an animation production project. The project became a megahit, garnering local and international acclaim and making Natsuko a household name. The first anime was so successful that when she would direct another highly anticipated anime, the adaptation of a romantic comedy titled “HATSUKOI: First Love”, the popular opinion was that it would be the birth of another masterpiece of animation.
However, production was slowed down as Natsuko was unable to create storyboards for the project due to never having experienced her own first love before. While eating lunch at work, Natsuko collapsed and died from overexertion, waking up in the world of another anime she worked on in her life, a depressing fantasy story called “A Tale of Perishing”. Can life in a horrible world reconnect Natsuko to her passion for art and animation?
ZENSHU is the original brainchild of series director Mitsue Yamazaki (director, Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun) and screenwriter/series composer Kimiko Ueno (series composition, Exquisite in Dungeon) and produced by MAPPA, with character design by Kayoko Ishikawa (costume design, Yuri!!! on ICE), who adapted the original character designs by Yoshiteru Tsujino. Akio Shimada serves as art director, with Kenta Fujita as director of photography and music by Yukari Hashimoto (music, Toradora). The main characters in the Japanese and English dubs ZENSHU are as follows:
-
Akio Suyama/Derick Snow as QJ
-
Anna Nagase/Madeleine Morris as Natsuko Hirose
-
Kazuki Ura/Ryan Negron as Luke Braveheart
-
Minori Suzuki/Alexis Tipton as Memerun
-
Rie Kugimiya/Luci Christian as Unio
Why the title fits
“ZENSHU” is a fitting title for an Isekai
The reason this anime series is called ZENSHU is something that's brought up pretty early on in the first episode, and it stands out quite a bit. In the early parts of ZENSHU episode 1, Natsuko takes us through her amazing career as an animator so far, trying to work on the storyboard for “HATSUKOI” to no avail. While trying to work, one of her colleagues presents work for a PV for their current project and after quickly flipping through the entire project, Natsuko handed the folder back to her colleague and said one word: “zenshu”.
The title drop in episode 1 gives us a simple explanation for the series title, which is written in Japanese 全修, with the first kanji “zen” is used to mean “all” and “shū“, which is the root of the word”shuri“, which means “repair”, but is also the main kanji used in words like “shushi“修士, which means “Master's Degree”. So, in this case, perhaps rather than “repair,” “remasters“?
The consequence? “Zenshū”, which means “fix them [the animation cels] everyone” – Natsuko said that the entire PV had to be redone. Interestingly, not too long after watching a previous work produced by their studio while eating lunch, Natsuko would pass out from overexertion and find herself living following the premise of “A Tale of Perishing” and meddling with the story that had been set up, effectively “remaking” it. More recently, the type of “isekai” adventure where a protagonist is of some mechanic, is brought into the world of one of their favorite media or one with which they engage a lot, has been on the rise (as in Dragon Ball Reincarnated as Yamcha manga, My Next Life as a Villain: All Roads Lead to Doom!or this season's Old man reincarnated as villain). The series is a reworking of not just “A Tale of Perishing,” but perhaps a renewal of a burned-out artist's connection to her greatest passion.
ZENSHU is available on Crunchyroll. New episodes are released on Sundays.
