The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was known for NPCs that lacked personality, were repetitive in their design, and had limited routines and behaviors. IN The Witcher 4that seems to be about to change, as the game's director recently revealed that it will be taking its NPCs to the next level. In a recent interview with Gamertag Radio, game director Sebastian Kalemba revealed that NPCs in The Witcher 4 are specially designed to look “as they live, with their own history.” Now, in light of their increased detail, it is worth considering what The Witcher 4s NPCs can introduce to the series' gameplay.
Back in the day Witcher titles, NPCs found in each game's world have primarily been featured as quest givers and suppliers, along with the natural role they play in fleshing out the world and atmosphere of each episode. Of course, this is generally the role of regular NPCs found in other video games as well, but it still means that the player's interactions with these characters are generally shallow and uninteresting, as they are largely useless beyond their immediate usefulness. However, The Witcher 4s more “immersive” NPCs could take interactions with them further, potentially even to romance.

Like The Witcher, Red Dead Redemption needs another way to reinvent itself
Red Dead Redemption doesn't have much room for growth beyond Red Dead Redemption 2, and this is due to a lack of Arthur Morgan's successor.
The Witcher 4 should let players romance their NPCs
More immersive NPCs in The Witcher 4 mean potentially deeper interactions with them
Provided The Witcher 4s “living” NPCs have their own schedules, motivations, and perhaps even evolving stories, interactions with these in-game characters can reach unprecedented depths for a Witcher game. As opposed to NPCs being just a backdrop to the game or simply warm bodies to fill a tasker or salesman role, The Witcher 4NPCs can offer more dynamic, more emergent interactions that strengthen players' connection to the world and make every encounter with an NPC feel purposeful.
Kingdom Come: DeliveranceNPCs are a great example of this design philosophy in action, and it is possible The Witcher 4 maybe aiming for something similar. For example, if a player steals food from an NPC Kingdom Come: Deliverancethat NPC may eventually become suspicious of the player, look for more food, or simply starve. Ultimately, this adds up Kingdom Come: Deliverances immersion, as it creates subtle consequences that can be seen playing out in the real world. The Witcher 4 can follow a similar path and have NPCs that evolve according to the player's choices, thereby deepening every interaction they have with these characters.
The possibility of romance NPCs would increase the player's freedom and make relationships more personal
The most satisfying way The Witcher 4 could go with its more immersive NPC design is to allow players to romance said characters, as that would be the ultimate payoff for part of a long-term investment. This may involve “wooing” NPCs in the earliest stages of the relationship by talking to them regularly, giving them gifts, and possibly completing quests for them at certain intervals, such as Stardew Valleycardiac events. The original Fable trilogy by Lionhead Studios is a clear picture of what it can be like for players to romance common NPCs in The Witcher 4as Fable opened the door for almost any eligible NPC to be romanced, as long as players put in the effort.
As opposed to NPCs being just a backdrop to the game or simply warm bodies to fill a tasker or salesman role, The Witcher 4NPCs can offer more dynamic, more emergent interactions that strengthen players' connection to the world and make every encounter with an NPC feel purposeful.
The Witcher series have always featured romance of some sort, although it has evolved over the course of the series. However, these relationships have always been limited to canonical, pre-selected romance options for players to choose from, unlike the entire population of the game world. As such, if The Witcher 4s more immersive NPCs would be romanticized, it would theoretically result in each romantic relationship feeling more personal to the player, thereby further enhancing that immersion. It is not an impossible feat, as has been done in the past, but it would be a significant departure from the tradition of The Witcher.
