New portal version is 100% ready to launch, but there is a big problem

A fan made Portal remake is 100% ready for release after 15 years in development, but has hit a major snag ahead of its planned launch. The new one Portal The project was first announced in 2011, but legal issues seem to be stopping the release at the very last hurdle.

Portal: Alive & Kicking is a fan remake of the original Portalitself is regarded as one of the best puzzle games ever made. It bills itself as “a complete remake and reimagining” of Valve's 2007 title using the visuals of the sequel, Portal 2. Visuals aren't the only improvements though, with development team Rhubarb & Rhubarb boasting other great changes, including “improved puzzle cues” and a “new dynamic soundtrack that combines the styles of both Portals abandoned drones and Portal 2s reactive score.”

Fan-Made Portal Remake Is 100% Complete, But Valve Is Ghosting The Developer

A recent post on the Steam Community forums has confirmed it Portal: Alive & Kicking is 100% complete and ready to be released to the public after a long 15-year development cycle. But according to a developer involved in the project, “We're using source code Valve gave us,” and while the team initially signed an NDA, it wasn't until recently that it signed an important non-commercial release form. Since then, the developer has not received a response from Valve, a wait that has continued for a few months according to another comment from the same person in late June. The license is required “because we have changed Portal 2s source code” to bring the project to life. Until Valve responds, there is nothing to do, and Portal: Alive & Kicking waiting in the wings for permission to release.

Who is that character?

A recent Reddit post on the Portal subreddit by user Livid-Active-3121 has aimed to draw attention to the ongoing situation. Some users in the thread suggested directly emailing Gabe Newell for a solution. It's no secret that Newell often responds to random emails from fans, many of which are later posted online to showcase the unique interaction. Whether he could solve the problem here, however, is another matter entirely.

It's somewhat surprising that Valve hasn't responded for help Portal: Alive & Kicking make it drop. The developer has usually supported, and even allowed, fan-created projects Black Mesaa complete remake of the original Half-lifeto release commercially on Steam. That's not to say Valve hasn't shut down fan projects before – it has, where necessary. However, given that there has been previous communication between Valve and Portal: Alive & Kicking team, there doesn't seem to be a problem here.

It's not clear what Valve intends to do with it Portal franchise in the future. The studio has been radio silent considering Portal 3allowing fans to theorize about what a potential new game in the series might look like. Considering that it has already been 15 years Portal 2 released, it's safe to say that Valve is in no rush to do anything with the IP, so it would be a shame for a project that Portal: Alive & Kicking couldn't be released and give fans their fix.
