Thanks to the delay of Tomb Raider remake Throne of Atlantis at the start of 2027, it looked like the year would bring two great Tomb Raider games to enjoy. Unfortunately, that won't be the case, as Tomb Raider: Catalystthe brand new post in India, has been pushed back to 2028.
While many old fans are excited to battle more detailed dinosaurs and explore a modern version of a mythical civilization with Throne of Atlantismany have also been looking forward to a brand new adventure. A new entry for Lara Croft has been long overdue, as the Survivor Trilogy concluded way back in 2018 with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider: Catalyst will always be exciting because of this big gap in releases, but because it will offer the first adventure of a united Lara Croft who experienced both Surviving trilogy and the original adventures of the character.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst's Delay makes 2027 just a little less busy for the series
Recently, while discussing the Luna streaming service with The Game Business, Amazon Games general manager Jeffrey Gattis highlighted the two major AAA Tomb Raider game in development. Here, the silent delay for Catalyst was officially confirmed, as Gattis revealed that the new game will “follow on in 2028” as opposed to 2027 as the reveal trailer indicated. The release date of Tomb on February 12 Raider: Throne of Atlantis remains locked, but players who expect one Tomb Raider double function in 2027 is unfortunately out of luck. An exact 2028 release date for Tomb Raider: Catalyst was not provided, so there is no telling when it will be released that year.

How fans will react to this delay will be interesting to see. On one hand, Amazon Games has come under fire after raising concerns about the future of IOI 007 game before reversing, not to mention the use of AI in Throne of Atlantisearly development. While all AI assets have since been replaced by human labor and art, the use of any AI is a sticking point for some players. Meanwhile, as critical of Amazon Games as some may be, many will likely condone this delay, as it is crucial that the next new Tomb Raider game stick the landing. Plus, with Throne of Atlantis still drops next year, the players will still have fresh Tomb Raider content to enjoy in 2027. The breathing room could even allow both games to shine properly and have their own time in the spotlight.

When Tomb Raider: Catalyst release, players will not only control an older and brasher Lara Croft, but they will also explore an environment with tons of fantastical elements. Those who missed this element of the series i Surviving comics — although supernatural elements were present, they were more tame — will surely be eager to battle “mystical forces” and uncover “ancient secrets” in 2028. Tomb Raider: Catalyst also promises a massive world to explore, filled with intricate puzzles and lost tombs that make up the “biggest” game in the franchise's history. The game will also run on Unreal Engine 5, which guarantees some beautiful graphics, albeit with some concerns about performance issues given the history of the engine.
On the bright side, with Amazon's Tomb Raider series with Sophie Turner currently filming, it can be assumed that it will come out in late 2027 to fill the void of Catalyst. With both a TV show and a big budget remake too Tomb Raider next year will still be a good year for IP, and now 2028 will also have something to look forward to.
