From GTA 6 to Wolverine, these are our most anticipated remaining 2026 releases

We're halfway into 2026 and the rest of the year still looks packed with games. I guess this is mostly due to the seismic release of Grand Theft Auto 6 throwing a big wrench in everyone else's launch plans, but it means we're in for a particularly heavy late summer and probably a pretty busy start to 2027.

There is plenty interesting titles releasing in the next few months, from a new Gears of War, a revamped Call of Duty, Insomniac's Wolverine and a few more to boot.

Halo: Campaign Evolved

28 July 2026

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a brand new, modernized version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved built in Unreal Engine 5. Early glimpses of this have shown great promise, and it reimagines this classic for a new generation.

But this isn't just an aesthetic overhaul, there are new weapons, new Skull mods (like the ability to play the entire game to be played in third person, and three brand new missions. It's old Halo in a new frame.

Marvel Token: Fighting Souls

August 6, 2026

From the creators of Guilty Gear comes a brand new Marvel fighting game. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls looks unlike anything else in the Marvel universe, with an aesthetic that recreates a familiar character with cool new designs and visuals.

Arc System Works has managed to inspire a whole new collection of Marvel fans thanks to the inclusion of some franchise favorites, like the Green Goblin and Carnage – which we got a glimpse of in its latest trailer.

Xbox showcases collages of Persona, Clockwork Revolution, Halo, Spyro, Gears of War, Fable and Doom.

It was all announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

August 27, 2026

I played a couple of hours of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy just a few weeks ago and I can tell you that this is definitely a spin-off from the main series of games, with a greater focus on combat than its predecessors. You can read more about my experience with the game here, but for the sake of clarity, my verdict was that this Resonance is basically an action movie version of the mainline games.

Expect a faster pace, more bombastic set pieces and a whole litany of bizarre mythology.

September 24, 2026

My colleague Jade King recently got to sit down with a preview of Control Resonant. She noted that fans may have been wary of the direction the sequel to Remedy Entertainment's seminal Control might have gone, but that we can all be sure that it turns out the studio knows exactly what it's doing.

“It may change combat style entirely as it moves to melee-focused character action, but the intrigue that drips from every environment and every single line of dialogue remains,” Jade writes in her full preview, which you can read here.

The Blood Of Dawnwalker

September 2, 2026

The more I read about The Blood Of Dawnwalker, the more curious I become. This is essentially The Witcher 4 but with vampires. Set in dark 14th century Europe, it looks grim and miserable, like any good video game. Rebel Wolves' debut title has all the makings of a classic RPG, but with so little to go on, we can only speculate how good this will actually be.

I'm totally hooked on its aesthetic, writing and concept, so count me down (ha ha ha) for its release later this year. Another potentially excellent title squeezed into one of the busiest Septembers I can remember.

Phantom Blade Zero

28 October 2026

Alongside its flashy new PlayStation teaser, Phantom Blade Zero is quietly picking up Steam for those who enjoy action RPGs. Our own Sam Woods played this way in 2025, and while S-Games' title may have initially come across as soul-like, he compared it favorably to games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry in his preview.

It has the potential to be another wuxia hit, like Where Winds Meet and Black Myth: Wukong.

Gears Of War: E-Day

gears of war e day boss walks through the fire with a big gun. Xbox

October 6, 2026

I keep forgetting Gears of War: E-Day is coming out this year and it's just because this year is so stacked, but this is also one that I'm probably most excited about. I have many fond memories of playing Gears of War as a teenager, and while I haven't visited the universe in quite some time, what better place to return than to the game that bills itself as the “brutal origin story of one of gaming's most acclaimed third-person shooters.” Gold star and a stick to whoever wrote that piece of PR because I'm all in.

I really, really hope that the game leans towards the total brutality of the so-called “Emergence Day”, the day when the terrifying grasshopper emerges from the ground and starts wreaking havoc on Sera, and from the trailers we've seen so far, it seems to capture that “day one” vibe that's always so exciting.

3

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Captain Price in Modern Warfare 4.

23 October 2026

I think I say this almost every year, but maybe Call of Duty is back? After the roaring success of Battlefield 6, it seems that Activision is trying to take one pulp of pages from the textbook, including (apparently) scrap crazy skins. No more Nicki Minaj parachuting on your head.

But it also looks like an upgrade in the way Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was for the franchise. Sometimes you just need to take big steps forward, with graphical modernization and game quality, to keep the audience happy. We think it looks great, but as always, Call of Duty will have to do so much to win back our trust.

Marvel's Wolverine

Wolverine riding a bike as a green highway sign for Squamish is seen in front of him in Marvel's Wolverine.

September 15, 2026

I've spent a lot of time over the past few days writing about Marvel's Wolverine (mostly analyzing the absolutely stacked September release window), and while I'm by no means a Marvel fan, I've started to swing around. Wolverine might actually be the game I play on my new PS5 before diving into GTA6.

My only hope is that Insomniac's writing can match Logan's supposedly grittier world, and hopefully its billing as “brutal” and “violent” lives up to my expectations. Some moments in the trailer are absolutely brutal, to be fair, when Wolverine jumps off a building and slams his claws into his face with a random grunt. Marvel's Wolverine is one to watch, of course.

Grand Theft Auto 6

November 19, 2026

Ah, Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally here. With pre-orders going live very soon, the release date has now been completely, 100 percent confirmed. Sure? I feel for the developers. How do you ever say goodbye to a project like this? Something that has taken many years to develop at an astronomical cost, widely considered to be the most expensive single piece of media ever created?

I have no idea. It's never finished, but eventually you just have to let go and let the players do the rest. After a long wait and months of hype, we will finally be able to play Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year.
