The biggest games will be shut down permanently in 2026

The subject of game is permanently disabled has become much more common in recent years. No matter how big the names are behind the scenes, and no matter how popular the initial launches may have been, it seems no game is immune to live service shutdowns, and 2026 has proven once again that the number of delistings will only continue to grow.

However, in some cases, you still have access to offline features and modes that can keep the action going indefinitely, even if the publishers or developers have decided to shut down the servers on the project. The next few months may be your last chance to experience these games online. After that, it may well feel like a ghost town, with no new content and no other players roaming around.

LET IT DIE

Another cult classic gone

• Cutoff date: August 31

• Dedicated offline replacement on the way.

After nearly a decade of business, LET IT DIE has finally reached the end of its online life. The violent action roguelike created a loyal following thanks to its bizarre style, brutal difficulty and unforgettable mascot, Uncle Death. Although it never hit any crazy players, the game managed to maintain a decent cult following that continued all the way until 2026.

Unfortunately, the developers confirmed that the game's online service will end on August 31, 2026, with a standalone offline version planned for later in the year as a way for players to continue climbing even after the main product is shut down. I played the game at launch, and a little while later on another platform, and I saw the appeal and the potential, from the intense combat to the addictive looting loop. The sequel may capture some of the same energy, but it will never come close to the carnage seen in the original.

NBA 2K25

Live-Service rotations strike again

• Superseded by the sequel

NBA 2K25 may still feel like a current release, but its long-term future was already mapped out long before the game even launched. So it is with annual franchise agreements such as FIFAalways shifts the spotlight to the latest and greatest product, regardless of how good the sales figures or player numbers were, meaning that despite being less than two years old, it's already time to turn off the lights for 2K25.

The mixed reviews don't paint the whole picture, and I actually think this game was one of the better ones in the series, at least in the last few years. There will still be chances to play offline and enjoy some less competitive matches, but this cultural trend of constant closures still feels quite unfair to the consumer, as they are not only expected but forced to pay constant premiums just to keep playing online.

Battlefield Hardline

A good try that couldn't quite last

• Offline content is still available.

Battlefield Hardline was controversial when it launched, swapping traditional military warfare for a cops-versus-criminals theme that was much faster and less focused on large-scale destruction. Over time, however, many other players and I came to appreciate its new take on the game Battlefield formula, especially its memorable multiplayer modes and surprisingly entertaining campaign that brought something new to an otherwise stale genre.

Unfortunately, the EA gents have announced that online services for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will end in 2026, closing the book on a truly unique experience forever. It makes sense, as dwindling numbers make it hard to justify keeping the servers online. Thankfully, the single player campaign will survive, that is Hard line will not disappear completely after the shutdown. PC players will also avoid the shutdown, with online functionality continuing there at least for the time being.

DiRT Rally 2.0

No one can compete forever

• Time trials, peer-to-peer and other modes remain active.

DiRT Rally 2.0 earned a reputation as one of the best rally games ever made, thanks to its much more demanding driving mechanics, from the handling to the more realistic stages that added a sense of authenticity to each race. While newer racing titles have arrived since launch, few have managed to replicate the same mix of accessibility and simulation depth that made it such a favorite among motorsports enthusiasts.

As good as the game is, the end of online support is on the horizon, marking the end of an era for one of the racing genre's most impressive titles. Still, it's nice to see that the career mode, custom events and the vast collection of rally locations will be available offline, ensuring you can keep drifting long past the sunset.

No offline feature here

• All the big names disappeared at once.

• Even the most stable games can fail.

Not every 2026 shutdown gets the same offline support, as some online experiences were never meant to be played without a connection, and the developers have shown no intention of changing that going forward. Some big names like Holoearth and The Elder Scrolls: Blades join a growing list of games that have struggled to maintain a long-term audience, despite having big franchise names and massive community support behind them.

New worldhowever, is a different case. Instead of shutting down immediately, Amazon is removing in-game purchases and phasing out parts of its monetization strategy before the final shutdown comes in early 2027. I'll personally be taking one last expedition out into the world, and I really hope that in the future the developers look back and learn from the mistakes made here to make better post-launch content for their games, even if things go south.
