After the confirmation that the DMZ mode will return Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4Infinity Ward revealed new details including where it takes place and the living world players will drop into. While the original DMZ never quite seemed to reach its potential, Infinity Ward takes a new spin on the mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and this time it sounds like it might just be what fans were hoping to see from the start.
Rumors had been swirling for a while now about the return of the DMZ and after the disclosure of Modern Warfare 4 in May, Infinity Ward finally confirmed it. Originally debuted in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2DMZ was never able to leave his initial beta phase before being sidelined in consecutive games in the series. While multiplayer and War zone continued to thrive, DMZ seemed to suffer from a lack of structure, long-term progression, and ultimately a reason to keep logging into the mode. However, it seems that Infinity Ward has taken that feedback to heart as the new version of DMZ aims to be something bigger.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ details
In a lengthy new blog post, Infinity Ward pulled back the curtain on this new version of the DMZ and what players can expect this time around. For this version of the extraction mode, players will head to an exclusion zone bordering Russia and the Korean peninsula called Hajin. Takes place after the events of Modern Warfare 4 campaign, the area is contested for the surplus of abandoned military technology, stockpiles of weapons and other assets just waiting to be claimed.

But part of what makes the DMZ return Modern Warfare 4 more enticing than its predecessor is how Infinity Ward has tried to make Hajin feel like a living world, something that changes every time a player enters it. It starts with environmental effects that can happen randomly, from sudden downpours, rolling fog and more weather effects that can change the opportunities and challenges during the course of each run.
The weather is just the start of it, as Infinity Ward has also created multiple progression paths for players to follow, from story missions, free exploration, as well as dynamic operations. The latter element is multi-stage goals that are generated for each match and are meant to build around excitement, large-scale moments and replayability.
The blog post also detailed Infinity Ward's focused attempt to build out a living world with emerging enemies and the idea of escalating threats. The former has been achieved by improving the AI of enemy soldiers found throughout Hajin. Players will see better coordination and highly reactive soldiers to put pressure on the players. As a result, Infinity Ward is aiming for battles that feel more active and unpredictable. The area also has a threat system that essentially tracks player activity and escalates things when necessary by mobilizing more troops, helicopters, armored units, and if things get really out of hand, soldiers called Deathstalkers can actively hunt players.
What kind of weapon is that?

For now, it seems like Infinity Ward is saying all the right things and learning from the past mistakes the series has experienced. Some of that extends to the reliance on cosmetics and collaborations, which seem to have leaned more heavily into the realm of unrealistic and slightly outrageous. The studio has already confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will focus on grounded and authentic cosmetics and collaborations. If Infinity Ward sticks to these promises, it seems highly unlikely that Seth Rogen, Bevis and Butthead, or Nicki Minaj will fall back on the battlefield again anytime soon.
