Did Destiny 2 Devs Send a Message With This Week's Xur Weapon?

Destiny 2's weekender, Xur, is bringing a selection of weapons that seem to send a message to fans after news broke of the game's death.

With Destiny 2As development neared, one of the game's former figureheads returned to social media to share some thoughts. Previous Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith wrote on Twitter that content was created to create memories and friendships. Smith said so Destiny 2 was a place where memories were made, and that its demise stung more because of unrealized potential rather than what the game once was. As former game director for Destiny 2Smith joined Bungie in 2007. Smith's first game credits were as a writer for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. In 2014, Smith worked as the design lead for the first Destiny game and was the director of The Taken King expansion.

Smith was also brought in as Destiny 2s gaming director, a position he held until 2020. During his time with Destiny 2Smith oversaw the release of expansions such as Abandoned and Shadowkeep. Smith went on to take an executive role at Bungie in 2020, although he was still involved in the Fate franchise. But Smith left Bungie in the summer of 2024 after Bungie laid off about 17% of its workforce. Before his departure from Bungie, Smith was said to have worked on Refunda Fate spin-off game that was canceled. Smith was not alone in leaving Bungie, as former CEO Mark Noseworthy left the company at the same time.

After the launch of The final form expansion 2024, the player counts for Destiny 2 had ended up in the tail. Although the multiplayer shooter genre thrives, players have since moved on from Destiny 2 and against other titles. Along with the dwindling number of players, Bungie's priorities have shifted towards other ventures. In short, Bungie's work on Marathon has long proved difficult for the company to maintain work with Destiny 2 amid dwindling resources.
