Warhorse announces Lord of the Rings RPG and Kingdom Come: Deliverance sequel

Rumors have been rife for weeks that Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios is working on a new Lord of the Rings game. It turns out that these rumors are true as Warhorse has now officially announced that it is working on a LOTR RPG as well as a third game in the Kingdom Come series.

Warhorse Is Working On Two Huge Games

Warhorse confirmed the news this morning, making their blockbuster double announcement on social media. “You may have heard the rumours, it's time to reveal what we're working on,” the post reads, confirming that the Czech developer is indeed working on what are likely two mammoth projects at the same time.

The announcement doesn't actually mention Lord of the Rings by name, which is an interesting detail. It simply refers to its untitled project set in Tolkien's world as “an open-world Middle-earth role-playing game”. However, it has used a LOTR hashtag. It also hasn't given its Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 sequel a name, which could mean it's not just Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3.

The news that Warhorse is cooking up something that will take players back to Middle-earth comes less than a week after Amazon revealed that their Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled. The two are likely unrelated, as the rumors have now been confirmed, it seems the Warhorse is working with has been cooking for a while already, although it's still almost certainly years away.

While there are certainly similarities between the world where the Kingdom Come games take place and Middle-earth, this will be new territory for Warhorse. The studio is still relatively young, with only two games to its name so far – Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel.

Fans of those games will likely be relieved to hear that the series will continue even though Warhorse has been called into LOTR duty. It doesn't seem like a sleepless situation where Warhorse takes the deal to make games for a popular IP and the work that got it to that position is largely forgotten.

There must be someone at Insomniac working on a new Ratchet & Clank game, right?

Which of the two projects will be prioritized on Warhorse is still unknown. We can speculate that the new Kingdom Come game will be first based on the image, although that order is reversed when the projects are listed. Whichever game comes first, after seven years of waiting between Kingdom Come titles, I'd be incredibly surprised if we play any of these games before the end of the decade.
