35 Best Anime With Overpowered Main Characters, Ranked
Super powerful protagonists capable of anything might feel redundant in an anime plot, but these series are fun to watch despite an OP MC.
1
Mundus
Undoubtedly, The Most Powerful Being in Season 2
- The Absolute Lord of Makai
- Intelligent beyond comprehension
- Powerful and cunning enough to dethrone Argosax (twice)
Mundus is a powerful being who has lived for centuries, first as an acolyte of Argosax, then, as a part of a trio of archdemons who governed Makai, until he became far too powerful and ambitious to share the power with others. As the undisputed ruler of Makai for Centuries, Mundus has become something akin to a god overseeing his creation. He rules with an iron (stone, actually) fist, and tolerates no insubordination whatsoever.
His powers are immeasurable; even Argosax had a tough time dealing with him. True, the first time he required help to dispose of the Demon Lord, but their second battle was absolutely decisive, even if Argosax wasn’t fully awakened yet. Even Mundus himself mentions that in terms of power, only one demon was considered his equal: the Demon Knight Sparda. Only the father of Dante and Vergil was able to measure with him and put an end to his thirst for conquest by separating Makai from Earth.
2
Sparda
The Only Demon Considered By Mundus as An Equal
- The only demon Mundus considered an equal
- Protector of Makai & Earth
- Decimated Entire Armies
Sparda, despite not having a considerable size or the threatening features of other Makai residents, is a being of pure power who has lived for ages. First serving Argosax as a powerful General, then Mundus as right hand, military advisor, and executor. He has, perhaps, fought more battles and defeated more enemies than any other demon in the realm, and has lived enough to notice Mundus’ changes, and been brave enough to oppose him. He also possessed enough power to go toe to toe with him, without either of them declared the victor.
Tired of Mundus’ thirst for conquest, Sparda chose to flee to Earth and seal the portal that bound the two worlds forever. His prowess in combat has been undisputed ever since, and in the words of Mundus himself: There has never been another demon general like Sparda, nor a being he respected like an equal after his defection.

Argosax
Former Demon Lord, And Incarnation of Chaos
- Chaos Incarnate
- Former Lord of Makai
- A Primordial Demon That Feeds on Souls
In the apex of his power, Argosax was a demon lord who ruled over both Makai and Earth, feeding on the souls of both demons and humans (also called Sapiens) alike. His hunger knew no bounds, and his levels of power were comparable to those of a God. Even when he was betrayed by Mundus and his other acolytes and beaten, he sealed his essence in the Arcana, and his consciousness remained, awaiting his revival.
Ages later, he corrupted a young Arius into becoming his acolyte and transformed him into an immortal sorcerer. His plan was always to possess Arius and reincarnate to destroy Mundus and take over Makai and Earth, though he couldn’t regain his full power. Who knows how powerful he would have been if he had managed to consume enough souls on time for the decisive battle?
4
Vergil
The Eldest of the Sparda Siblings
- The True Heir to Sparda
- Fast as Lightning
- Has Two Demon Forms
Close in power to Mundus himself, Vergil has followed the steps of his father, Sparda, and has become the Demon Lord’s second in command. Fast, deadly, and precise like no other Makaian warrior, his only downside is his half-human side. Mundus has manifested that if he weren’t a halfbreed, he would be even stronger than Sparda himself.
Since Vergil is more disciplined and has survived a harsher environment than his brother, Dante, it is obvious which of the two is the stronger twin. His command over his demonic abilities has surpassed Dante at every step, and his swordfighting skills, honed in the fires of Makai, have turned him into one of the deadliest demons in hell.

Dante
Far From His Versions In The Games
- A Versatile Fighter
- His Talents Are Just Awakening
- Fights More by Instinct than Technique
Next, in terms of power, we have Dante, everyone’s favorite demon hunter. Even though his abilities might feel a bit underwhelming, Dante is stronger than the average demon, and is closer to Vergil than he himself thinks. The problem is that he suffers from severe trauma and is unable to control his Devil Trigger.
In the past, Dante learned faster and was more skillful than Vergil, but after the tragedy that ended his mother’s life and separated him from Vergil, he became lazy, lenient, and too comfortable. At least, that’s what the series tries to imply. Dante has yet to awaken his full potential, and when he does, the power rankings are going to shift.
6
Arius
Genius, Sorcerer, And Walking Money Bag
- Powerful Sorcerer
- Has lived for over 600 years
- A genius inventor and billionaire
Arius commands the dark arts like few other beings in the DMC universe. A powerful sorcerer at the service of Argosax, Arius has lived countless lives, keeping his memories intact and honing his abilities as a dark sorcerer and inventor at the same time. He has reached the pinnacle of sorcery, science, and alchemy, which allows him to surpass almost any human on Earth.
After building the Uroboros company, he became a powerful figure in the US Military as a shadow backer, putting President Hopper in power as a puppet, while he schemed the return of his master and commanded an army of demon clones.
7
Jester (Arkham)
A Dangerous And Psychopathic Half-Demon That Inspires Dread in Everyone
- His true powers are yet to be disclosed
- Skillful schemer and corrupter
- Outsmarted Mundus, Arius, and Argosax
Jester (also known as John Arkham) is an artificial Human-Demon hybrid who has played a sideline villain role in the Devil May Cry series ever since he was revealed in a flashback during S1. As a former human being, he was the father of Mary (Lady) and a genius researcher of the occult. Obsessed with unlocking human potential, he turned himself into an abomination with a split personality.
This half-demon is the result of the obscure being who took over Arkham’s body, and he seems to have an obnoxious and mysterious ability to manifest around and traverse the planes. His power is undoubtedly high; otherwise, Mundus would have disposed of him long ago. He acted as a double agent for Arius, helping to orchestrate Argosax’s return. He might be the main antagonist in a future DMC season.

Lady
Has Shown An Extreme Change Compared to Season 1
- Has grown a great deal, becoming a full-fledged demon slayer
- Has above-human capabilities and reflexes
- Skillful marksman and martial artist
Mary Arkham, also known as Lady, has suffered a great deal from past traumas, and his meeting with Dante during Season 1 was less than ideal. However, thanks to the bond they formed, and her reflection on her past actions, Mary became even more determined to beat the evil forces who led to the tragedy of the Makaian refugees being slaughtered by Darkcom.
She’s seeking to redeem herself and perfect his combat abilities in the process. Now, she likes to be called Lady, and is armed to the teeth with tons of combat expertise and an arsenal of weapons made by Nell Goldstein.
9
Chi (Lucia)
A Cloned Demon, Subservient To Arius
- A cloned demon with powerful abilities
- Smart and cunning
- Capable of flying at high speeds
A deadly and cunning fighter, armed with dual karambits and capable of shapeshifting into a winged demon. Chi (also known as Lucia in Devil May Cry 2) is a vicious guard dog for Arius, and his second in command. She is a genetically bred demoness who has served the dark sorcerer loyally for years.
Cold and murderous, Chi is unfazed by the deaths of hundreds of her sisters. She considers herself special, superior, and unable to feel fear. Up until her last moments, she displayed a level of loyalty that only years of neuro-programming and brainwashing could achieve. The perfect soldier.

The Secretaries
The Results Of Years of Experimentation
- Arius private army of demon clones
- Similar abilities to Lucia’s
- Stronger in great numbers, unable to feel fear
Arius’ private army of cloned demons, all based on the mother/sister (Lucia/Chi), and inspired by the Secretary Bird. These clones answer only to their superior and Arius himself, and display a mindless loyalty, forcing them to fight to the death once they receive an order.
As demons they are considered high-ranking, more so when they attack in flocks. Their devil trigger is similar to that of the original clone, with dark feathers and sharp talons that they use to cut their foes to shreds.
