Nier Automata Producer Explains Anniversary To Be Continued Message

Nier: Automata producer Yosuke Saito has confirmed that it was his idea to share a “to be continued” message while celebrating the game hitting 10 million copies sold on its ninth anniversary.

Outside of Nier Replicant and Reincarnation, it's been a long time since fans of the series have had all that much to be excited about. You'd think that Square Enix would be eager to jump back into the series after Automata lit the world on fire, but it's been nearly a whole decade since that game's release, and we have no clue what's happening with the series next.

That being said, there was a brief light at the end of the tunnel towards the start of this year when a video was released celebrating Automata crossing more than 10 million copies sold to coincide with its ninth anniversary. The video notably ended with a “to be continued” teaser, giving us all hope that something was in the works, which producer Yosuku Saito is apparently unsure of.

Nier Automata's Producer Asked For “To Be Continued” To Be In The Ninth Anniversary Video

Sadly, He Doesn't Know If Something Is Actually Coming

As reported by Twitter user Genki_JPN, Famitsu recently shared an interview with Nier: Automata director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito. During the interview, the pair were asked about the “to be continued” message that was included in the ninth anniversary and 10 million copies celebration video.

Please, I'm on my hands and knees begging for more Nier.

Saito revealed that he was the one who asked Square Enix to include that tease, but that he doesn't know “if there is a continuation or not”. The producer noted that he just felt that it was “absolutely necessary” to have some kind of hint at a future in the ninth anniversary video, perhaps to give fans a bit of hope.

While Saito's comment is pretty insightful, director Yoko Taro went for his usual strategy of iconic bluntness by saying that he thinks the message means that “we're still going to milk it, we're going to make money”. Honestly, if it means we get another Nier, then I'm happy to be milked like that.

Saito once again gave us all a little glimmer of hope for Nier's future, pointing out that the ninth anniversary is “not a good stopping point” and that he'd like to continue until the 10th. While it sounds like both don't know for sure that something Nier is in the works, they are both clearly happy to talk about it.
