Dogs are animals with lots of symbolic meaning. They stand for loyalty and friendship, which often makes them popular video game sidekicks.

Where to find a dog in Outbound

You can get a dog once you've reached the second biome/area of the game by exiting through the rock tunnel northeast of the first area. Keep following the path that leads you into this second area, and you'll come across a signal tower. Just behind the signal tower you will find a path leading towards a building in the distance.

This building is called Paws & Whiskers Lodge. Go inside and collect the various items, including the dog treats, before taking the back door and entering the fenced yard.

Here you will find four dogs all in different colors. All you have to do is walk up to the dog you want to adopt as your companion and press A on Xbox or X on PlayStation. This will then bring up a screen where you can select their name and confirm your selection.

Once you have confirmed the name of the dog you have chosen to adopt, you cannot change your mind and change their name or choose one of the other dogs. You can also only adopt one dog, even if you really want to adopt all four.

What does your dog do in Outbound?

The main thing you will notice is that your dog will immediately have a nice backpack that will help you carry things for you. Approach them when you have items in your inventory and interact with them to deposit up to 10 items (initially) into their backpack. This backpack can be upgraded at the sewing table after you download the necessary blueprints.

You can also pet your dog by pressing RB/R1 and selecting the 'Pet' option. This really does nothing but show your dog some affection. Other options you will initially have when using the RB/R1 to give your dog commands are:

Finally, if you are a performance/trophy hunter, you will want to make sure you adopt the dog. Adopting one of the dogs unlocks the “Fur-Ever Friend” achievement, and petting your dog for the first time unlocks the “Can you Pet the Dog?” performance.
