What is The Godless Realms Saga in Final Fantasy 14?
Navigate a world without Zodiark or Hydaelyn
The original tale of Final Fantasy 14 was the struggle between Zodiark, the dark god of the Ascii who was called to anticipate the last days, and Hydaelyn, the will of the star in FF14 which split its dark counterpart and the world of Etheir into fourteen shards. This story arc included everything even End walkerwhere both gods were killed and the final days that triggered their creation were brought to a definitive end.

The Godless Realms Saga, on the other hand, concerns the aftermath of the world, now bereft of its gods. The Ascii i Final Fantasy 14 have been decimated, their paragons defeated and their overlords scattered and diminished. The people of Etheirys are now free to pursue their dreams and find their own paths…or at least, that's what people thought.
During Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5's Main Scenario Quest, players learned some shocking truths. The Ascian Halmarut revealed that, without Hydaelyn present to keep the Source and its reflections separate, Etheirys naturally tries to combine itself into a single world. But unlike Ascian's attempt to do this to revive the Zodiac, this natural reunion has no regard for life. If this event, called the Solstice, takes place, all life on the Source and its reflections will cease, and the world will essentially start over from square one.
To stave off the solstice, Halmarut has created a faction of its own called the Winterers. With individuals from various reflections, such as the conservation leader Calyx of Alexandria on the ninth shard i FF14: DawntrailThe Winterers seek to cause artificial reunions like the Ascians before them, but to prevent total annihilation, rather than reviving the Zodiark. While that sounds like a noble goal, if Calyx's modus operandi in Alexandria is any indication, the Warriors of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn will not approve of their methodology. Thus, Etheir's saviors are confronted with two goals: stopping the Winterers from carrying out their inevitably cruel reunions, while also figuring out how to prevent the Solstice from destroying all life on the star.

How Final Fantasy 14: Evercold Plays Into the Godless Realms Saga
And where we might be going afterwards
Enter Evercoldnext Final Fantasy 14 expansion is coming in early 2027, and the first serious deep dive into this Godless Realms Saga story. Although smart enough not to take an Ascian at his word, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn take the threat of the Solstice seriously. And, near the end of the Patch 7.5 story, Calyx gave the Warriors of Light an important hint: he and Halmarut were going to the Fourth Reflection to check on Winterer there.
The fourth is the shard that players see in the teaser trailer for Evercoldand the main setting for the expansion. According to Calyx, the Reflection is a utopia afflicted by a terrible frost that forced its inhabitants to build vast, magical kingdoms in the sky. Full of crystalline constructs, stunning Norse-themed architecture, and mysterious mystical giants roaming the land, the Fourth is a strange and wonderful world that promises great adventure and danger in equal measure.
It is currently unclear whether the frost plaguing the Fourth is a result of the impending solstice, but it seems likely that it is related. Likewise, the identity of the Winter Man is a mystery, as only four new characters can be seen in it Evercold trailer: the one-eyed Auri man, the praying Auri girl, the elderly narrator and the young Au Ra listener. Although the child and the narrator are presumably innocent, the other two, or another character yet to be introduced, may be Halmarut's collaborators.
Either way, stopping the Winterers will mean nothing if the solstice occurs, and right now it seems the only way to stop it is if the reflections are artificially reunited. To that end, the Scions will likely need to find a way to “manage” the reflections somehow, possibly by figuring out a safe way to reunite them without destroying the humans who live there. Calyx confirmed that the Winterers all have different motives for helping Halmarut, but unlike many other villains in Final FantasyAscian himself is most interested in preserving humanity. If the Warriors of Light can figure out how to fix the Godless Realms without accident, maybe Halmarut can be convinced to help, even if the other Winterers still need to be stopped.
All that said, The Godless Realms Saga has only just begun Evercold. Beyond the source and the fourth are five other shards of Etheirys that were not reunited by Ascian's misfortunes in Final Fantasy 14:
-
The First
-
Almost succumbed to the flood of light
-
Setting of Shadowbringer expansion
-
-
The Thirteenth
-
Unsuccessfully merged into a river of darkness and became the void
-
The origin of all Voidsent in FF14prominence in post-End walker patchwork stories
-
-
The Ninth
-
Almost destroyed by the storm surge
-
Home of Alexandria, Treno and Living Memory from Dawnrail
-
-
The Eighth and that Eleventh
-
Mysterious shards with no information available about them
-
Using Ethos, the interdimensional key tied to Azem's crystal, the Warrior of Light now has the ability to cross worlds. As they master this power, and perhaps figure out how to prevent the solstice, it seems inevitable that they will visit the other disjointed reflections of Etheirys in Final Fantasy 14especially eighth and eleventh. It seems the only way the Scions will be able to stop the Solstice from wiping out all life is by causing a Rejoining on their own terms at every reflection, which means fans should brace themselves for a world-hopping adventure.

It's hard to say exactly how long the Godless Realms Saga will last, but the Hydaelyn and the Zodiark arc ran for everyone A kingdom again and its first four expansions over roughly a decade. Needless to say, the critically acclaimed MMORPG is charting a course that will likely take at least a few expansions to resolve, if not longer, so fans should look forward to the twists and turns Final Fantasy 14 have in store for them.
