A new rumor claims that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age is underway from Square Enix. The system has also received enhanced versions of games previously offered, taking advantage of the improved graphics and performance offered by the Switch 2.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age was first released in 2017 on 3DS and PlayStation 4, before coming to other platforms. Over the past nine years, Dragon Quest 11 has become the best-selling game in the series. With more than 8.5 million copies sold, the RPG has helped introduce the franchise to gamers who may have never played any of the previous entries.

While the game was released on the original Switch in 2019, a Nintendo Switch 2 version could offer a number of upgrades over the original. Currently, there is no way to know if Square Enix will offer an upgrade path for existing owners. Some Nintendo Switch 2 games do not offer upgrade paths, which has been a source of frustration for those who purchased the games on the original system.

While Square Enix has not confirmed a version of the Dragon Quest 11 for the Switch 2, fans may not have to wait long to see if this rumor pans out. Dragon Quest Day falls on May 27th every year, and there's a chance this could be announced on that date. Dragon Quest 11 was temporarily delisted on the Nintendo Switch last year, before being relisted on the eShop with Square Enix as the publisher, rather than Nintendo. It's possible that Square Enix made that decision knowing that it would offer a Switch 2 version in 2026.
Square Enix has been one of the biggest early supporters of the Nintendo Switch 2. Although the publisher offered several games on the original system, many of its games would have required too much of a performance downgrade to be ported to the Switch. Now that Nintendo has a more powerful system, the company is behind it Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy seems to be making up for lost time. Final Fantasy 14 was just announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released on the system earlier this year.

Dragon Quest 12 is currently in development, but the game seems to be quite far from release. A Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11 could help fill the void, and perhaps attract more newcomers to the series. Dragon Quest is one of the gaming industry's longest-running franchises, but still lacks the name of Final Fantasy. Square Enix has tried to introduce Dragon Quest to new audiences with its HD-2D remakes, and a remake of a critically acclaimed entry in the series could help with that goal. For now, fans will have to wait and see if this rumor pans out.
