If it felt like Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, the first new entry in the iconic Fatal Fury fighting game series since 1999, came and went without much fanfare, then you were mostly right.
Despite featuring famous soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo as a playable character, plus a full tie-in with WWE's annual WrestleMania pay-per-view, City of the Wolves sold dismally (CotW maxed out at 4,674 players on Steam and currently sits in the 200s), prompting SNK's new CEO to transition into a new role.
The Victrix Pro KO Spakless Fight Stick has become my go-to controller for fighting games
Victrix's latest leverless knitting needle is one of the best on the market right now.
However, SNK has plodded along, releasing new DLC fighters and continuous updates to the game, hoping that it can rekindle interest in an important member of the fighting game legacy. Its latest update will see City of the Wolves receive a permanent price cut, one that should make it much more palatable to those on the fence. It will also coincide with a major free update.
Fatal Fury is cheaper than ever, but is it enough to spark interest?
As revealed during the larger Wolves' Destiny trailer, SNK has announced that Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will now start at $19.99 for its base version.
If you want the full package (City of the Wolves + Season Pass 1 and 2), it costs $49.99. The first season pass will be sold on its own for $14.99, while Season Pass 2 will cost $19.99.
Season Pass 1 includes the following characters:
-
Andy Bogard
-
Ken
-
Joe Higashi
-
Chun-Li
-
Mr Big
The Season 2 Pass includes the following characters:
-
Kim Jae Hoon
-
Nightmare geese
-
Blue Mary
-
Wolfgang Krauser
-
TBD
-
Kenshiro
In addition to the price cut, the game is getting a huge story mode that will be completely free. It is fully voiced, with over 15,000 recorded words, including full Japanese and English dubbing, as well as 150 new original illustrations.
As Push Square noted, Wolves' Destiny mode will join Episodes of South Town as available single-player content, more than anything SNK has ever included in any fighter. The update will also include some UI changes, as well as the very popular Ring Out feature that older Fatal Fury titles incorporated.
Whether this permanent price cut, plus separation of the DLC, is enough to get people on the fence about buying in remains to be seen. At least you can't blame SNK for trying.
