The Last of Us Part 2 gave us the shock of our lives when it revealed how bad Joel was at golf. You know what I mean. A character we had all grown attached to was brutally killed and left a huge hole in our hearts, whether you are more fond of Pedro Pascal's portrayal of the character or Troy Baker's.
While they were both fantastic as Joel, bringing their own ideas to the character, Baker undoubtedly set a good baseline, along with the game's writers. Some fans will never quite get over losing Joel, but Baker thinks we may not have seen the last of him.
Troy Baker thinks we'll be seeing more of Joel
Speaking to Eurogamer, Baker talked about how he loved Pascal's portrayal of the character he once played and how good HBO's The Last of Us TV show eventually turned out to be. “The show is much bigger, there's a lower barrier to entry,” he said. He later added that he “loved” Pascal's portrayal.
“I really applaud [game creator Neil Druckmann] to be able to say, 'yeah, let's do this show,'” he said. “He knew that the story of Joel and Ellie was important enough, and sometimes you have to take the mountain to the man. There are going to be people who would never pick up the controller and never experience that story, and what a tragedy that would be. So let's take it to them.”
There is no excuse not to cast a trans actor to play Lev in The Last of Us
Cisgender woman Kyriana Kratter has been cast as the trans character Lev in HBO's The Last Of Us.
He added that he hoped to see Pascal bring something new to the table when it came to playing Joel, admitting that he did in every episode. “I hope Pedro is not the last person to play Joel,” he continued. “I want to see this character spread and iterate across multiple mediums, whether it's TV, film, more games, comic books. I see people cosplaying as [Joel] all the time… he made an impression.
“I definitely know we haven't seen the last of Joel, whether it's Naughty Dog or anyone else.”
