Crimson Desert has a ghost problem

Crimson Desert looks good in general, but it suffers from a pretty extreme amount of ghosting in some situations, and the playerbase is now taking notice. Fixed Crimson Desert is known for its graphics, among other things, there's no denying that it's far from perfect in that regard, and ghosting in particular can be a difficult problem for players to deal with.

Crimson Desert looks and works pretty well for what it is, given the scale and complexity of the game as a whole. Instead of relying on standard options like Unreal Engine 5, developer Pearl Abyss has chosen to use its own in-house Black Space engine. Black Space was built on top of the studio's previous Black Desert Engine, seen in Black Desert Onlineand it has proven to be an impressively flexible piece of kit. Its rendering suffers from many of the same problems that most other modern game engines suffer from, such as ghosting.

Crimson Desert One Rule

Crimson Desert has a rule you need to learn early

Crimson Desert looks like a game you can rush through, but learning to slow down and explore its world is key to avoiding its toughest roadblocks.

Crimson Desert's ghost problem is a big deal

Although it is not the first time someone has brought up ghosts in connection with Crimson Desertthe issue was brought back into the spotlight when a PlayStation 5 player posted a Reddit video showing it in action. Ghosting is an artifact of modern game rendering technology, which relies on cross-frame timing data for image stability. The effect is that of exaggerated afterimage which is particularly visible in areas of high contrast and low light. Because there are no apparent plans to reduce ghosting Crimson Desertnext major update it will likely remain a problem for the foreseeable future.

Crimson Deserts ghosting problem is completely cross-platform, although some settings can alleviate it to some extent. PC gamers enjoy Crimson Desert can rely on the platform's wealth of graphics tools to see which settings work best for them. For example, Nvidia users can give Ray Reconstruction a try, which helps albeit at a significant performance cost. Disabling upscaling techniques like DLSS and FSR can also help, as upscaling can exacerbate pre-existing ghosting problems by quite a bit. However, this too comes at a performance cost, and may not help much.

While PC players can at least fiddle around with Crimson Deserts graphics settings to see which options reduce ghosting on their setup, this isn't really the case for console players. While Crimson Desert opens up some console settings to adjust, they will largely not change how ghosting works or how players perceive it. Switching to quality mode with a lower target frame rate is definitely worth a shot anyway.

Crimson Desert is a potential bestseller in 2026, which means a large number of players will experience its highest highs and lowest lows. Ghosting, once noticed, becomes a particularly annoying problem with no easy solution outside of developer intervention. Between ghosting, extreme performance drops in certain situations, and overall bugginess, it's slowly becoming clear that Crimson Desert has a lot of technical debt that Pearl Abyss should focus on sooner rather than later.
