New Vegas Designer comments on the possibility of a remaster

Fallout: New Vegas likely won't be getting a remaster any time soon, according to the game's original designer, Chris Avellone. Rumors of a potential Fallout: New Vegas remasters or remakes have circulated among Fall-out fans in the wake of Season 2 of the Amazon Prime series takes Lucy, The Ghoul and Maximus to the iconic Mojave Wasteland. However, no official announcement from Bethesda has been made regarding the project at this time.

The Fall-out franchise has been light on video game releases in the time since the last post, Fallout 76was released almost 8 years ago in 2018. While Fall-out fans have been able to enjoy two seasons of Amazon Prime's Fall-out series in recent years, a new game in the franchise still seems to be years away, with Bethesda confirming that Fallout 5 will be the next game the studio is working on after The Elder Scrolls 6 is released. In the meantime, Fall-out fans are hoping to see some of the older games in the franchise get the remaster treatment, but Chris Avellone now says fans shouldn't hold their breath for a New Vegas remaster in the near future.

The most antagonistic faction in Fallout has faced criticism for being overused, but fans have voiced their support for more.

Fallout: New Vegas designer Chris Avellone doesn't think Bethesda could easily produce a remaster

In an interview with Fall-out YouTuber TKs-Mantis, Avellone says he believes Bethesda “doesn't have the engineering skills to do a remaster of New Vegas.” His opinion stems from the fact that Obsidian Entertainment, the original developers of the Fallout: New Vegasnever delivered the final source code to Bethesda after the game was finished. As a result, Bethesda would essentially have to recreate New Vegas from scratch, a task perhaps too ambitious for a remaster.

One solution Avellone suggested was for Bethesda to possibly take the original Creation Engine version of New Vegas and wrap Unreal Engine's visuals around it, similar to how The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was created. However, Avellone notes that Bethesda would likely want to test this process with a remaster of Fallout 3 before proceeding to attempt a New Vegas remasters. Since both Obsidian and Bethesda are part of the same parent company, Microsoft, it is possible that the two studios could work together to remaster New Vegasbut this is not a guaranteed partnership.

Avellone has quite a long history with Fall-out series and RPG as a whole. Not only does he have credits for his work on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegasbut Avellone has also contributed to games such as Planetscape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2and Neverwinter Nights 2. Avellone was also a co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, so he has a good understanding of the game development pipeline, especially when it comes to creating RPGs.

Despite these disappointing comments from Avellone, there is still hope that a Fallout: New Vegas remasters will eventually see the light of day. Meanwhile, there are hints that Bethesda is working on one Fallout 3 remasters, including credible insiders reporting the development of a Fallout 3 remasters and even referencing toy lists Fallout 3 Remastered appears online. Although it might not be New Vegas remaster that some fans are hoping for, if Avellone's thoughts are any indication, Bethesda could be laying the groundwork for a full-scale one New Vegas remaster with a for Fallout 3 leading the charge.
