Rust 2 has apparently just leaked

Fans of survival games are in for a bit of a surprise, as it seems Rust 2 just leaked. Or at least it seems that way – it's also possible that the leak is some kind of PR stunt, or possibly unrelated to the original game. However with Rusts popularity and the long window since launch, it's not unrealistic to expect something new in the works from developer Facepunch Studios.

First released in early access way back in December 2013, Rust sees players scour a large open world in search of resources. The game is best known for its interactions between players, which often end in humorous bits of fun, or more often, violence. With a slew of features added since launch, Facepunch Studios likely has no shortage of ideas for ways to evolve the formula in a potential sequel.

Rust will be getting a spin-off game for mobile, and with this news, the future of the beloved indie hit could look a lot brighter.

Rust 2 may be on the way

That sequel may be coming soon, as pictures on Rust 2The Steam page is now circulating on Reddit. The page unfortunately lacks practical information and only has the name “Rust 2” and a free-to-play tag. The Steam page is still available via a direct link as of this writing, although it is unlisted and will not appear in searches. SteamDB has specifically flagged Rust 2 list as suspect, because it “may be malicious or pretend to be another product.”

On Reddit, the store page has attracted a lot of attention. But most importantly, Facepunch Games COO Alistair McFarlane, known as Alistair_Mc on Reddit, commented, “You didn't see anything.” Notably, the Reddit account that made the original post had been around for mere minutes before the image circulated online. Some fans have taken that, along with McFarlane's comment, as an indication that this could be a marketing ploy.

In another message, McFarlane stated that he, “[visits] subreddit a lot,” and sometimes see posts that cause confusion. He added, “Now you're asking yourself, is this real? Maybe?” While that doesn't really clear things up, it's certainly a way to get fans excited about a potential full reveal sometime in the near future. Summer Game Fest is in June, so it makes sense that a developer might want to start building excitement should a full reveal happen on gaming's biggest stage.

It is not the first time a potential sequels have made headlines. Back in 2023, when Unity changed its pricing structure, Facepunch founder Garry Newman said that Rust 2 wouldn't be a Unity game due to the cost increases. Unity has since changed course, and little to nothing has been heard about the game since then. Because of that, it has been unclear if a sequel is indeed in the works.

Fans may soon have an answer. If a new game is on the way, it's sure to make waves. Rust is still one of Steam's most played games, typically around 150,000 concurrent players. It is easy to place Rust in Steam's top ten most played games, and sometimes even in the top five. Of course, transitions are difficult, and if the game ends up being free-to-play like the store page tags say, there will definitely be some questions about potential microtransactions. For now, Rust fans just need to stay tuned for more information.
