Born Again Season 2 is Once Again Asking the Eternal Question

Second season of Daredevil: Born Again has been a huge improvement over its predecessor and arguably reached the same level of quality as the Netflix series that was truly beloved by Marvel fans. Fight scenes are much more fun to watch play out, more time is spent with a customized Matt Murdock, and returning characters from the original show have bigger roles — all improvements that fans were hoping the second season would make. With Daredevil having epic battles aboard boats and inside prison camps, not to mention a third season of Daredevil: Born Again With them at work, it's only a matter of time before fans are begging for a Man Without Fear game again.

Obviously, there is no indication that a Daredevil video game will happen anytime soon, with rumors suggesting that such a title is in development. It's simply a mixture of wishful thinking, the enduring popularity of the character, and how well Defender of Hell's Kitchen would fit for a video game that leads to the endless demands of such a project. For now, all fans can do is keep asking when he'll finally get his due and become more than just a member of the ensemble cast that Marvel Rivals and Ultimate Alliancehowever with Born again booming, it would certainly make sense for such a game to be greenlit sooner rather than later.

An unexpected Marvel hero has just Hulked Out for the very first time, and it will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.

In 2004, a Daredevil the game was in the works (likely trying to capitalize on the buzz from the Ben Affleck movie) but was ultimately scrapped and served as the only attempt at a solo game based on the character.

What would a Daredevil game be like?

It's not too hard to imagine how a Daredevil video game could play out, as the character's dual life allows for a variety of mechanics and some superhero gameplay. A Daredevil video game may include:

  • Combo-focused combat and stealth mechanics comparable to Batman: Arkham and Marvel's Spider-Man.

  • An open world version of Hell's Kitchen that takes advantage of Daredevil's billy club traversal.

  • A deep rogues gallery for side stories and boss fights, including the Kingpin and Bullseye along with some deeper cuts like Typhoid Mary, Mr. Fear and The Owl.

  • Choice-based lawyer segments where players can succeed or fail in defending Matt Murdock's clients, enabling (or costing players) some extra upgrades.

  • Puzzles that make use of Daredevil's heightened senses, where tracking via his enhanced sense of smell and eavesdropping via his keen hearing are also feasible. Radar vision can be another mechanic.

From a narrative standpoint, any developer tackling a hypothetical Daredevil game would be spoiled for inspiration. While the character has had some mediocre runs here and there, like Diggle and Ahmed, a large majority of Daredevil runs have been awarded classic status from comic book readers. Second only to perhaps only Batman in terms of consistent quality, a game could find success by spinning off elements introduced by virtually any of the character's best writers. A simple remix of Miller's work could work, as could a bolder idea like Bendis' Kingpin Murdock or the prison arc from Brubaker's run. Waid's creepy and light-hearted story could serve as a fun change of pace for a game if the goal is to stand out from the MCU shows, while Soule's run could allow for an NPC sidekick via Blindspot, or Zdarsky's run could allow for a second playable Daredevil via Elektra. Really, the sky's the limit for a Daredevil game, so much so that it's easy to imagine a multi-game franchise centered around the vigilante lawyer.

The perfect developer for a Daredevil game is as obvious now as it was years ago

If it's this easy for fans to come up with a Daredevil game, surely it's only a matter of time before it's seen as a safe investment by Marvel Games and whichever studio it chooses for the task. And even if it has its hands full with what's to come Marvel's Wolverine a game that might just have a Daredevil cameo — not to mention a leaked X-Men game and Marvel's Spider-Man 3Insomniac Games really is a perfect fit. It's building its own connected Marvel universe, Spider-Man's battle would be a good starting point for Daredevil, and Marvel's Wolverine seems ready to prove that the studio can nail a slightly darker tone. Just as Insomniac was the name for a Daredevil game when the Netflix show was at the peak of interest back in 2018, this studio remains the top choice for such a game today. And while Insomniac's roster is pretty full at the moment, it would undoubtedly be worth the wait to see Daredevil finally get the play he deserves – even if it's years away.
