Civil War director and 28 Years Later writer Alex Garland confirmed last year that he and A24 had teamed up with Bandai Namco and FromSoftware on an Elden Ring film, with Cailee Spaeny, Kit Connor and Ben Whishaw in talks to star. While we've heard little about the project in the months since, if leaks are to be believed, filming could begin soon.
TikTok user throxtv posted a video last night showing a Church of Marika set, presumably in the British countryside. The clip has since gone viral, garnering over 25,000 upvotes on the game's dedicated subreddit. But it's worth taking this clip with a grain of salt.
AI has improved significantly in recent years, to the point where controlling signs are becoming harder to spot. What raises red flags in this video is that no crew is present on set, and there have been no reports that principal photography has begun. Throxtv also didn't provide a location or any additional details, so it can't be verified.
Just recently a Doctor Who “set leak” went viral, showing the 8th Doctor returning alongside Billie Piper, but it turned out to be AI.
However, running the clip through various AI detection programs yields promising results, and while the technique have improved, if this were a fake it would be among the most impressive.
Alleged leak of Elden Ring footage seems to confirm it's set post-split
Provided then that the set leaks is indeed, it can confirm when the film takes place – post-Shattering. Some assumed (or hoped) that it would be a prequel based on George RR Martin's writing for the game, showing what The Lands Between looked like before Rani stole a Rune of Death fragment, but the ruined ruins of the Church of Marika seen in the clip suggest otherwise.
Beyond that detail, we can only speculate as to what the movie might be about, such as whether it's a straight adaptation of the game or an adjacent story. Assuming the set leak is real, filming could begin soon, so we might find out more in the coming months – especially if A24 is filming openly in the UK, as throxtv's alleged discovery suggests.
Anyway, if this set leak isn't fraudulent, it's a near 1:1 recreation of an iconic POI from the game, giving us a glimpse of how authentic this customization aims to be.
