PS5 games likely to be unplayable by 2030

If there's one good thing about the digital gaming age, it's that gamers have more access than they ever did before, compared to the NES, Sega Saturn, PS2 and so on. That said, fans from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s never had to worry about their games disappearing because everything was physical.

Even with physical games today, many of them have online features or online experiences that will eventually be shut down one day. The following games may be phased out between now and 2030, when the next PlayStation system should be here. From licensing issues like with Marvel Rivals to music rights as with Rocksmith+let's go over why these games could disappear digitally.

Marvel Rivals

On top, for now…

All hero-based multiplayer shooters that shoot against Monitoring is usually dead in the water at launch, which does Marvel Rivals an incredibly bizarre example. It launched strong, and the fanbase has only grown since it debuted in 2024, with solid updates and character drops like Deadpool, which was one of the most recent.

It proved so popular that there was even a PS4 version made in 2025. Can the game survive to 2030 since it's a Marvel licensed game? This is where the cracks start to show, as licensed games tend to disappear faster.

2XKO

Sentenced after one month

2XKO is another spinoff from League of Legends from Riot Games, and this time it's a free-to-play 2D switch-tactical fighting game. It just launched in January 2026, and after a month Riot Games came out to apologize for having to downsize their team to make the game more sustainable.

This meant that it was not doing well enough to support a full staff, and that was only after a month, which could mean 2XKO might not even last a year, let alone 2030. It's a shame too, because the character and level designs are amazing, not to mention the mechanics are solid for a fighting game.

Silent Hill: The Short Message

The road to PT

Silent Hill: The Short Message was released completely free in 2024 to create hype for the rebirth of Silent Hill franchise. Later that year, the remake of Silent Hill 2 launched, dwarfed Silent Hill: The Short Message completely and even more so when Silent Hill b was released a year later.

Silent Hill: The Short Message was also not very well received, as many fans thought it was an average first-person horror game that lacked combat, but had some good scares and visuals. Because the community doesn't strongly support it and because Konami has already pulled a free Silent Hill game before, aka PT, Silent Hill: The Short Message could disappear any day now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate

The fate of turtles is always bleak

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is a top-down action roguelike made in the style of Hadeswhich was released in 2023. It's not the best TMNT game ever made, but it's far better than anyone could have predicted as a licensed game. Each turtle has a unique weapon and power set, and the campaign, while lighter than most roguelikes, is still fun.

TMNT games disappear all the time due to licenses expiring, but hopefully the game won't meet an unfortunate fate in 2030 digitally. Thankfully, at least physical copies exist.

Tetris forever

Collects the best puzzle games

Tetris forever was released in 2024, and it's a collection of some of the best Tetris games of all time, inclusive Tetris, Hate, Tetris Battle Gaiden, Tetris Time Warpand many others. The music and placement mechanics are so simple and clean that any type of player can pick up these games and have a good time.

Some even include local multiplayer for competitive or cooperative play, which could be a big reason someone would pick up this game besides their love of Tetris. Collections may come and go depending on popularity and licensing, but at least there are physical releases.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2

Not the best Gundam game out there

Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 is an action game set in Gundam universe that is also a free-to-play experience. It's getting pretty old for PlayStation fans since it debuted on PS4 in 2019 and PS5 in 2021, which means it could be gone sooner than 2030, especially since it wasn't well received at launch.

There are always several Gundam games out there on consoles, and right now, SD Gundam Battle Alliance and Gundam Breaker 4 are fairly well respected. It is possible that Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 will be replaced with a sequel, or just disappear entirely as a subseries.

Hot Wheels: Rift Rally

Toys-To-Life is back?

Hot Wheels: Rift Rally was released on PS5 in 2023, and is a free downloadable app that also requires a physical purchase. Like the 2020s Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is technically Toys for Life, as players will buy cars, set up tracks in their living space, and then drive the cars around with a camera attached to create an augmented reality experience.

In a large space, players can make it a really cool and unique experience, but not everyone has good setups for projects like this. As shelf space becomes limited in stores, and these cars disappear, so will the app.

Rocksmith+

Ubisoft can go down

Ubisoft started Rocksmith franchise to compete with Guitar Hero and Rock band 2012, but the gimmick was that players could actually learn guitar with lessons. The original version was replaced in 2014, and then there was a long gap before that Rocksmith+ was launched for free in 2022.

Players could plug in their own USB-supported instruments and purchase individual songs to play and learn, and the catalog has become quite extensive. It's a good quality feedback system, but when it comes to music games, they can often disappear faster than a license like Marvel because the music rights are even more limited.

The finals

Too many competitive shooters

The finals is a competitive first-person shooter released in 2023 that was burning hot for a minute. It was also popular enough to get a PS4 version a year later, and the competitive scene on all consoles was pretty well matched. As of 2026, the number of players is quite low.

A new update with characters, maps, weapons and more could revive the game, but it could be fleeting even if it were to happen. Like what was said about Marvel Rivalscan the free-to-play shooter market be fickle, as there are so many options out there.
