Fortnite's new Squibbly skin seems to confirm once and for all that Chapter 7, Season 2 was originally supposed to be about Vikings, before being replaced with the current theme.
Not surprisingly for the biggest game on the planet, Fortnite is one of the leakiest ships out there. Insiders, data miners, and leakers all dive into the game's files and find out what's going on behind the scenes long before Epic ever announces anything, which means we usually have a good idea of what's planned for Fortnite.
In some cases, Epic is actually the one tipping off what's being worked on for Fortnite, as it sometimes sends out surveys for both potential collaborations and skins. An example of this was a recent character survey that included a bunch of skins themed around Vikings and Norse mythology, suggesting that there would be a season in the future.
Fortnite's Viking season appears to have been canceled, and Squibbly is our best proof yet
Their Fishsticks obsession seems to be a rewrite
Since that character survey was sent out, however, Fortnite hasn't had a Viking season, even though many thought that was what Chapter 7, Season 2 would be about. With that season, Showdown, now live and themed around a rivalry between the Foundation and the Ice King, it's pretty clear that the Viking season has either been canceled, postponed, or heavily reworked.
Fortnite has once again proven why it is the future of video games
Epic Games has delivered one of Fortnite's best live events to date with the amazing Zero Hour.
It was already evident from the lack of Norse mythology in Fortnite, but the new season introduced a character that directly proves that plans have changed. Squibbly, the squid who inexplicably hates Fishsticks more than anyone else on The Island, has actually been seen before in the skin of the character study.
As pointed out by Twitter user SentinelCentral, Squibbly's original concept art showed them wearing a pin that says there are no Vikings, suggesting that they were originally intended to be part of the Norse season. That pin has now been changed to one that says no Fishsticks, suggesting that his main character trait was actually reworked after the season theme fell through.
Squibbly's hatred of Fishsticks is the most interesting thing about them, so Epic may actually have cooked up moving away from the Norse theme.
This not only suggests that Chapter 7, Season 2 was meant to have a Viking theme, but also that the season was replaced somewhere along the way. Epic may stop using some of the ideas later in Fortnite's lifecycle, but we know for sure that Squibbly is no longer tied to whatever happens with the Nordic theme.
