Friendship can be increased through the following methods:

  • Level up.

  • Winning battles.

  • Use vitamins.

  • Joins the Pokémon while it is in the party.

  • Having Daisy Oak give the Pokemon a massage.

If a Pokemon is holding a Soothe Bell, the rate at which its happiness increases is increased by 50%.

Friendship Evolutions were introduced in Gen 2, and all involve Gen 2 Pokémon. Because of this, friendship development becomes possible only after players unlock the National Pokedex after the game is over Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. If you try to evolve a Pokémon through friendship before getting the National Dex from Professor Oak, the evolution animation will trigger, but it will stop halfway through.
