Expedition 33 Studio Sandfall Interactive remains tight-lipped about the future of the franchise

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33The executive writer says she can't comment on the possibility of a sequel. The turn-based RPG was one of the biggest success stories of 2025, with Sandfall Interactive's debut title receiving widespread praise from players and critics alike and dominating awards season. Now, as eyes turn to the future, some are clamoring for one Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sequel, but Sandfall remains tight-lipped about when or if fans can expect one.

Demand is certainly not an issue for a potential sequel. In addition to being a smash hit among gamers, Expedition 33 secured 436 Game of the Year awards, broke Fire Rings record for most GOTY wins with a single game. As you'd expect from anything so popular, the game wasn't without controversy, with its use of AI and status as an “indie” title attracting some skepticism, but overall, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 saw a historic run in 2025. However, whether Sandfall will follow up that success with another game in the same universe is less clear.

When asked about Clair Obscur would turn into a multi-game franchise, lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen told GamesRadar+ “If I told you, I'd have to kill you.” Fans have already pointed out that there are tons of things a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 the sequel could be improved or expanded, and the game's unique world leaves plenty of room for new stories, but Svedberg-Yen insisted she couldn't comment on the idea one way or the other. While she also said that she “would love to tell people” where Sandfall Interactive will go next, the author would offer nothing but double down on her need for privacy.

Some fans may take Svedberg-Yen's refusal to comment as evidence that there are plans for another game in the series, as it wouldn't take a bit of snobbery if a sequel was completely off the table. In an interview in 2025, Sandfall CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche also said Clair Obscur is a franchise name and even went so far as to say Expedition 33 was just one of the stories the studio wanted to tell in that universe. Those comments seem to contradict Svedberg-Yen's silence, but it could be that Sandfall plans to expand the franchise but is hiding whether that will mean a direct sequel or a spin-off. The timing of any future Clair Obscur games are also a mystery, and plans will change over the years.

Regardless of the future Clair Obscur If the game is anything to go by, it likely won't be the next thing to come from the studio. Broche has confirmed that Sandfall Interactive has already begun work on its next game, but details are thin beyond that it's “very unique and artistic.” Considering Sandfall's size and how recent Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released, the next game is likely early in development and may take some time to come out. Fans shouldn't hold their breath for any major updates at the moment, which could mean waiting for another one Clair Obscur title, sequel or otherwise, all the more painful.

Despite their early success, Sandfall has expressed an unwillingness to capitalize on their rise to fame by scaling up. According to Broche, the Expedition 33 the studio's boundaries help it be the best version of itself, leading to the kind of creativity that made its debut title so outstanding. Only time will tell if that approach pays off again, if in a new one Clair Obscur title or something else entirely.
