Slay The Spire 2 is the 20th most played game in Steam history

A week ago, we were all in awe as Resident Evil Requiem marched to a staggering 344,214 concurrent players on Steam, becoming the most played Resident Evil title on Steam and in the top 10 most played single player titles ever on the platform.

A week later, Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the extremely popular rouge-like title, has said hold my beer. That's because, after first releasing on March 5th, the same date as Marathon, the indie title has become the 20th most played title by top concurrent players on Steam … ever.

Yes, you read that right.

With a whopping 526,793 concurrent players, all of which came just over 10 hours ago at the time of writing, Slay the Spire 2 is the 20th most played title on the platform. Its peak has surpassed several other record-breaking titles, including Arc Raiders, as well as the aforementioned Resident Evil Requiem.

Steam tires on an orange background.

Steam Deck is the first of many video game RAM shortage tragedies

Valve's handheld is currently out of stock due to RAM and memory shortages.

It is extremely important to note that this is an Early Access title, which means that the final product has not been delivered. Still, that hasn't stopped players from showing up in droves to play the game.

At $24.99 for the title, assuming all prices remain relatively equal between regions, that's over $12 million for developer Mega Crit. Again – and we can't stress this enough – the game is only 48 hours old.

Marathon, meanwhile, has yet to reach its original peak

That Slay the Spire 2 was able to double the number of concurrent players it had long after launch is pretty amazing. Because, on the other side of the coin, Marathon has yet to even match the 88,387 it peaked with on PC.

Right now Marathon has 73,045 players, no small count by any means. Its 24-hour peak is 78,498. However, both of those numbers are just under 10,000 players down from their peak of 88,337, at least on Steam.

Originally, Mega Crit had some funny words for Bungie on social media after it became increasingly apparent that Slay the Spire 2 was more popular than Marathon. However, those barbs happened when 177,181 players engaged with Slay the Spire 2 versus the aforementioned 88,337 for Marathon.

It's unlikely that anyone could have predicted that Slay the Spire 2 would go on to grow to that amount by hundreds of thousands to march to the half-million mark and enter some rare Steam territory. But that's exactly what happened. Momentum is a serious thing and Slay the Spire 2 has it in spades.
