One Piece Quietly Teases Secret Connection Between Shanks and Boa Hancock (And Fans Totally Missed It)

In the last tale of One Piecefans have been waiting for certain characters to make a move and establish their presence in the story, and this includes the likes of Shanks and Boa Hancock. With One Piece Volume 114 has recently been released and writer Eiichiro Oda has established an interesting connection between these two characters. On the surface, Shanks and Boa Hancock have absolutely nothing in common, except that they are deeply connected to Luffy. However, a very strong connection has emerged between these two, and it ties into the big reveal that came about Shank's mother, Magnolia.

One Piece volume 114 SBS is officially out, and in it Oda has revealed a lot of exciting information, as always. One of the most important parts that Oda touched on in this SBS concerned Shank's mother. In the manga, Oda showed Shanks' mother at God Valley, where she gave birth to both Shanks and Shamrock. On the day of the God Valley Incident, she was eventually killed by Saint Garling, but before she died, she entrusted both of her children to Dragon.

Surprisingly, Oda never showed her face to the fans, and only the fact that her hair was red was revealed. Even her name was kept secret until now. In One Piece Volume 114 SBS, Oda continued to confirm that her name is Magnolia. On the surface this looks like a perfectly normal name, but when you look at it on a deeper level, Magnolia is really a name inspired by a particular tree shrub that bears a specific flower that also goes by the same name.

In the world of One Piece, women who have names connected to flowers are almost always related to the Kuja tribe. For example, Boa Hancock, Boa Sandersonia, Boa Marigold, Shakuyaku, Gloriosa, and even Lily are all directly connected to Kuja in one way or another. Magnolia, in that sense, will likely be connected to them as well, especially given that Oda decided to hide his face. It is through this connection that fans are able to find out a lot more details about Shank's powerful Haki, and things suddenly start to make sense.

Shank's Kuja Connection explains his Haki Power

In the world of One Piece, Kuja are known to have natural incredibly powerful Haki. In fact, all members of the Kuja tribe value strength above all else, and they all possess tremendous Haki power. Even normal Kuja civilians have the ability to use strong Haki, and for them it comes naturally for some reason. As such, among the Kuja, the strongest, Boa Hancock, has overwhelming Haki of all three types.

Luffy in several forms

One Piece: All Of Luffy's Forms, ranked by design

Luffy has been given tons of powerful forms that have come in all sorts of weird shapes and sizes, some looking much better than others.

Even before the time jump, Hancock's sisters were able to use advanced forms of Haki, like Ryo, and potentially even the ability to read complex movements. Now that a connection between Kuja and Shanks has been established through Magnolia, it makes a lot of sense why Shanks is a master of Haki. Given Kuja's natural affinity for this power, Shanks could have directly gained his incredible Haki skills from this very tribe in the One Piece world. Those with Kuja's blood will have a natural affinity for high-level Haki, and Shanks has clearly shown incredible mastery over this power, greater than almost anyone else in the world of One Piece. This could be directly linked to Kuja, and essentially Boa Hancock as well. Shanks and Boa Hancock could carry the same blood, making them incredibly powerful conquerors and pushing their Haki to an extremely high level.

Oda will flesh out Shank's mother later

If Shank's mother is indeed a Kuja, then surely Oda will continue to develop her even more later. This is because the Kuja are known to specifically give birth to women on the island.

  • However, it is also implied that they may give birth to sons, as Kuja is an island of women, and this means that if they ever do give birth to sons, those children will likely be left on a completely different island.

It makes sense why Magnolia stayed in God Valley when you look at it that way. Perhaps she gave birth to two sons instead of daughters and therefore would not be willing to go back to Amazon Lily since men are not allowed on that island. If Magnolia decided to raise the children in God Valley instead, then everything would start to make sense. In fact, Oda may even establish a connection between Magnolia and Boa Hancock, depending on how he wants to move the story forward. The Final Saga is sure to shed a lot more light on Magnolia, as well as the Kuja Tribe, and fans should stay tuned for that.

One Piece can be read on Manga Plus.
