The 2026 Game of the Year race has officially begun. Mewgenics came out of the blocks with a score of 88 on Metacritic, and just two weeks later the highly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem comfortably matched that, becoming the highest-rated original game in the series in over 20 years.
While critical reviews may have dropped before the game's release, Requiem has now been in the hands of the public for a few days, and in that time players have begun to form their own opinions and review the game for themselves. It's clear they're enjoying it. As of Monday, February 2, with over 2,250 reviews, Requiem is currently the most user-reviewed game in Metacritic's history.
Resident Evil Requiem's 88 on Metacritic is no small feat, making it the best-reviewed new game in the series since 2005's Resident Evil 4. We scored the game 4/5 here at TheGamer, saying, “Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft engage in a delicate dance where all their complicated little steps come together in some distinctive steps.” This critical sentiment has clearly translated directly to the fans as well.

On Steam, the game sits at Overwhelmingly Positive with nearly 18,000 reviews, and on Metacritic it has the highest user review score of any Resident Evil game, at 9.5/10.
Before that, Resident Evil 4 held the top spot, with its 2005 iteration scoring a 9.1 and the latest remake scoring an 8.9. The 2002 remake of the original game also received an 8.9, with Resident Evil 2's remake and original game also receiving an 8.8 from fans.

Not only does Resident Evil Requiem have the best user reviews of any Resi game in Metacritic's history, but its 9.5 score also makes it the best reviewed title ever on the aggregation platform.
Last year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tore the crown from Metal Gear Solid and The Witcher 3, earning itself a 9.5, and now Resident Evil Requiem's 9.5 is apparently a fraction better, with Metacritic showing it in the top spot.

There's a good chance that, as more people play and review the game, this score will drop and Requiem will fall, but as far as launches go, the Capcom team has reason to celebrate, especially as it's already one of the most played single player games ever on Steam.
