From a Lando Calrissian project to ambitious projects from well-known Hollywood names, these projects can expand Star Wars universe even further. But the question remains whether these plans will actually be turned into movies or TV shows.

Simon Kinberg's potential Star Wars trilogy seems most likely to happen
As early as 2024, Simon Kinberg was confirmed to be working on a new one Star Wars trilogy. While some rumors suggested that it would be an extension of the Skywalker Saga, it will likely be a separate trilogy. In August 2025, Kinberg spoke to Nerdtropolis about his excitement for the film and his long lead time Star Wars fandom.
Kinberg already has experience with the franchise through his work at Star Wars Rebels. In her exit interview, Kathleen Kennedy explained that the script is still being worked on after extensive changes. Still with Kinberg's Star Wars experience, his project is likely to hit the screen.

James Mangold & Beau Willimon's Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi Could Explore a New Era
James Mangold and Beau Willimon have also worked on a project for Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. Unlike many of the other projects in the works, which focus on the Skywalker Saga era and beyond, their project would instead focus on the distant past of Star Wars universe. However, James Mangold's potential commitment to the DCU could put the film on the back burner even further.
However, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jediwhile it's on hold, it still seems likely to be done. Kennedy confirmed that a script had been written for the project in her exit interview. She said, “Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it definitely breaks the mold and it's on ice.” Like many of the projects currently on hold, the change in management at Lucasfilm could make or break the film's chances of getting a big screen release.

Taika Waititi's Star Wars script is written, but pending
While Taika Waititi has been slated to work on one Star Wars project since 2020, is the film still under development. In an interview with AmountWaititi confirmed that his film would focus on new characters and try to bring back the fun of the original trilogy. Featuring comedy classics like What we do in the shadows and Thor: Ragnarök under his belt, Waititi seems like an excellent choice for a more humorous one Star Wars film.
In her exit interview, Kennedy confirmed that the script was ready for Waititi's film, which she liked. But when she leaves the role of Lucasfilm leader, the fate of the film rests with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan.

Donald Glover's Lando TV series or movie is still in the early stages
Originally pitched as a streaming series, Lando was meant to follow Lando Calrissian's exploits throughout his life. Donald Glover has been attached to the series from the beginning after his turn as Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story received much praise. However, the project has undergone several changes, including a switch to a Lando film instead, which was reported in 2023.
In his exit interview, Kennedy mentioned that Donald Glover had submitted a script for the project, meaning it's still in the works. But with the change in leadership at Lucasfilm, its fate remains uncertain. When Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan take over the management of the company, they may choose to reimagine the project once more or even delay it further while they wait and see the reception to The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighters.

The fate of Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron project is currently unknown
Patty Jenkins was officially confirmed to be working on a film about Rogue Squadron pilots in 2020. The project was not confirmed to be based on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron game. Instead, it was intended to be an original story. But Jenkins' commitment to Wonder Woman 3 delayed production. After Wonder Woman 3 fell through, Jenkins revealed she would be working on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron again.
But fans haven't received many updates on the fate of this project. In an interview with IGN In 2023, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that the project was still being discussed but that it could be reconceptualized as a streaming series for Disney+ instead. Still, the total lack of discussion of the project in Kennedy's exit interview implies that the project may have been canceled.

Rey's New Jedi Order movies are also in limbo
On Star Wars Celebration 2023, a New Jedi Order film was announced, starring Daisy Ridley as Rey with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct the film. While Lucasfilm promoted a lot of hype about the film and its possibilities after the reveal, the New Jedi Order movie has been plagued by numerous delays. Kathleen Kennedy didn't even mention the film or its status during her exit interview.
However, there may still be hope for the New Jedi Order. With Obaid-Chinoy's extraordinary track record in film, television and journalism, she takes up Star Wars the universe would be welcome and refreshing. Rey's fate Star Wars the future could lie with the fans' reception of Star Wars: Starfighterspremiering next year as the first film to take place after the Skywalker Saga.

Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy is unlikely to happen
After Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last JediRian Johnson was intent on making a whole Star Wars its own trilogy. This decision was taken before his film received excessive hate from a vocal minority in the country Star Wars fandom. This reaction plus several other factors, including Johnson's enormous success Knives Out mystery franchise, is making a new venture into the Star Wars franchise that isn't likely to happen anytime soon.
Unlike Jenkins Rogue Squadron project and the possible Rey movie, Rian Johnson was mentioned in Kathleen Kennedy's exit interview as she was directly asked about the future of the trilogy. Kennedy quoted Knives Out films as a reason why the trilogy became a backburner. But she also said, “I think he was intimidated by the negativity online.” Therefore, Johnson's trilogy is the least likely backburner project to actually make it to the screen at this moment.

Adam Driver and Steven Sodenbergh's hunt for Ben Solo has already been rejected
In an interview with AmountAdam Driver revealed that he had been working with Steven Sodenbergh and Scott Z. Burns on a pitch for The Hunt for Ben Soloa film that continues Kylo Ren's story after his apparent death in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. But in the same interview, Driver also admitted that Disney had rejected the film “because they didn't see how Ben Solo was still alive.”
Still, Lucasfilm was more open to the idea. In his exit interview, Kennedy said, “Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver turned in a script written by Scott Burns. It was just amazing. Anything is a possibility if someone is willing to take a risk.” Thus, even though the script was rejected earlier, with new leadership at Lucasfilm and Disney, Ben Solo's story may have a chance to continue after all.
