Although the first Far Cry game was made by Crytek, Ubisoft has since developed and published subsequent entries. But that one Far Cry franchise has been absent from Ubisoft's repertoire for a few years. The most recent entry in the Far Cry series was the 2021s Far cry 6which saw actor Giancarlo Esposito play the role of the game's main antagonist, Anton “El Presidente” Castillo. At the time of this writing, Far cry 6 has a mixed to mostly positive rating on Steam.
The Division 3 producer was hyping the game as a “monster” just a week ago, but now he's working on Battlefield
After discussing the future of The Division series for Ubisoft, Julian Gerighty announces that he has left the company to join Battlefield Studios.
Three classic Far Cry titles will soon play at 60 FPS
Even if Far cry 3, Blood Dragonand Primal are currently limited to 30 FPS on consoles, that won't be the case anytime soon. On January 16, Ubisoft posted a cryptic image of X that showed three equations using emojis. The emoji combinations quickly came out of the fans, who came up with it Far cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragonand Far Cry Primal will be playable at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Ubisoft awarded a 'gold star' in response to users who guessed their riddles correctly, and the company later clarified that the 60 FPS updates would arrive on Wednesday, January 21. However, it is unclear if these updates will be available for free or if these will require separate purchases on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Currently, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the aforementioned Far Cry Games can be played on current-gen hardware via backwards compatibility, which includes features such as a 1440p gaming resolution and automatic HDR. However, PS5 users in particular can get the better part of the upgrade deal. PS Plus Extra subscribers currently have access to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Editionand Far Cry Primal via the game directory. Given that PS Plus Extra costs $14.99 per month, it remains to be seen if the Far Cry upgrades will be available through that method. Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is also available via Far cry 5 Season ticket. Further details on Far Cry upgrades, including download size and other features, are still unknown as of this writing.
Ubisoft may have more surprises planned
Ubisoft's social media is teased for Far Cry may just be the tip of the iceberg for the company. Various rumors have indicated that Ubisoft may soon have announcements for Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed franchise. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake may soon be available for launch, along with the highly anticipated remaster of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Given that both Ubisoft titles have been the subject of speculation throughout 2025, it stands to reason that Ubisoft could show fans more details to kick off 2026. However, unless the company says otherwise, rumors of Ubisoft's plans should be taken with a grain of salt.
Regardless of Ubisoft's immediate plans, current-gen console gamers will soon be able to experience three of the best Far Cry titles with higher frame rates. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S now in their sixth year on the market, time will tell if other previous generation titles will receive upgrades that take advantage of each system's hardware.
