As if building a gaming PC wasn't hard enough already, a trusted insider has claimed that Nvidia and AMD are both looking to “significantly” raise the price of GPUs this year.
In recent years, gaming has become much more expensive as a hobby, with the prices of both consoles and the games themselves rising as production costs increase. In 2025, however, the dam truly burst, as the cost of pretty much everything began to skyrocket, from the Switch 2 and its physical release to the depressing arrival of $80 games.
Console gaming has been hit hard in recent months, but it's especially noticeable for PC users, as GPUs, RAM, memory and storage have started to become much more expensive, largely due to the rise and investment in AI. As if that wasn't bad enough, a new report claims that AMD and Nvidia will “significantly” raise GPU prices in the coming year.
GPU prices could start rising again as early as this month
Expect costs to continue to rise through 2026
As pointed out by Eurogamer, this report comes courtesy of Newsis, who recently reported that both Nvidia and AMD are looking to raise the price of GPUs in 2026. According to the report, Nvidia and AMD plan to start a “gradual price adjustment” over the next few months, with AMD hikes as early as this month and Nvidia apparently set to start in February.
The increased prices will reportedly hit consumer GPUs first, including Nvidia's GeForce RTX 50 and AMD's Radeon RX 9000. Newsis points out that the RTX 5090, which was released for $1,999 in early 2025, could end up costing as much as $5,000, which is a sincere price. the majority of players from being able to afford the hardware.
Of course, the price increases should come as no surprise given everything that has been going on in recent months. GPUs are already more expensive because of how powerful they are getting, but the rise of generative AI has put more emphasis on the technology than ever before, making consumer GPUs much harder to come by because demand is so high across the board.
As if paying five thousand for an RTX 5090 wasn't bad enough, it's very likely that these price increases will only get worse in the future, especially as both Xbox and PlayStation look to introduce new generations of hardware. AI has already made the world a worse place in most respects, but it's having a particularly noticeable impact on gaming before 2026 has even really begun.
