Total War: Warhammer 40,000 has officially revealed some of the first gameplay information about the various factions, and out of all of them, the Aeldari sound like they will bring something completely unique to the game. Instead of forming massive armies to crush the opposition that many Creative Assembly fans may be used to, the Aeldari in Total War: Warhammer 40,000 use subtle, mystical powers and alien technology to achieve esoteric goals that go deeper than simply annihilating their enemies.
During The Game Awards, Creative Assembly officially confirmed it Total war will go to Warhammer 40,000. The galactic conflict of the 41st millennium finally gets Total war treatment with multi-planetary campaigns, featuring unique apocalyptic weapons, war machines and tactics for each of its four asymmetric launch races: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks and Aeldari.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000's Aeldari Gameplay Explained
But among all the factions, the Aeldari bring something truly unique Total war series. Formerly known as the Eldar, the Aeldari are essentially space elves within Warhammer 40,000. During a recent development roundtable, lead designer Simon Mann talked about how the subtle Aeldari can throw Total war veterans for a loop. “They are not a faction built for mass combat. They are not large armies fighting each other,” Mann said. “Every soul lost is a soul not returned, so you really have to pick your battles.” Instead of swarming the opposition with bodies, the Aeldari will use stealth, Webway gates and elite squadrons of “glass cannons” to defeat their enemies in indirect combat, rather than frontal combat.
That said, unlike most other races, the Aeldari may not focus solely on galactic dominance. While other factions push for conquest, the Aeldari are instead focused on preventing galactic catastrophes using Craftworlds, the Webway, and other esoteric technologies. “Everyone else is still trying to kill you while you're trying to do it,” Mann explained, “but you know what your mission is and what you need to achieve, and you approach it with a kind of grim determination.” This will give players a unique playstyle focused on alternate objectives, saving numbers and indirect combat – although their elite forces are still devastating in a fight when used to their full potential.
Craftwords, the synthetic planetary home of the Aeldari, will be available in the game as an “off-map setting piece, which is actually where you recruit all your units.”
How will the second Total War: 40,000 Factions play?
Mann also gave some information on how the other races will play out Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Like the Aeldari, the iconic Space Marines Warhammer 40,000 fame is an elite force; they may field a fraction of the number of opponents, but each warrior is worth 100 of another army's forces. Superhuman soldiers and powerful military technology are offset by their lack of infrastructure, as Space Marines will not be able to expand cities and economies in the same way as a typical faction.
Meanwhile, the Astra Militarum, or Imperial Guard, will function mostly as a regular Total war the army. Thousands of troops, billions of citizens, and a massive industrial super-complex spanning entire galaxies allow players to set up artillery alongside countless regiments of Warhammer 40,000 Astra Militarum soldiers ready to die for the Empire. Among the launch factions, their playstyle will be the most familiar to veterans Total waralbeit with one Warhammer 40k turn.
Finally, there are the Orks. Like the Imperial Guard, the Orks will have an insane number of troops, with countless Boyz washing over the battlefield in a green age. With jerry rigged weapons, swept vehicles and chaotic and fearless warriors, the Orks are one Warhammer 40,000 race that encourages aggressive playstyles. That said, rather than building infrastructure and defenses like the Astra Militarum, the Orcs are all about momentum via the Waaagh mechanic: if the Orcs have no one to fight, they'll start fighting each other instead.
Fans whose favorite faction is not yet in the game needn't worry too much; Chaos Space Marines, as well as “all other iconic factions from the setting,” are part of Creative Assembly's plans, meaning they will likely be added in DLC or a sequel, in the same way that Total War: Warhammer fantasy trilogy. Although it may take many years, the Tyranids, Tau, Necrons, Drukhari and more will probably all make their way into Total War: Warhammer 40,000 eventually.
