In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the head of The Blood of Dawnwalker detailed how the game's main quest will work, and it sounds a lot like how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild approached its main goal. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may be less than a decade old, but it's already been incredibly influential in the video game space, with its player-driven open-world exploration inspiring many new adventure games.
First announced at the beginning of the year, The Blood of Dawnwalker is an action RPG with a dark fantasy setting that comes from many of the minds behind it The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. IN The Blood of Dawnwalker, players will take on the role of Coen, a half-human, half-vampire who spends his days helping citizens and engaging in sword fights, and spends his nights teleporting, crawling on walls, biting enemies to recover, and using his claws to fight.
The Blood of Dawnwalker's Main Quest takes a page out of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's playbook
The core imagination of The Blood of Dawnwalker is that Coen only has 30 days to save his family from the clutches of a powerful vampire lord, with the countdown ticking down each time players complete a side quest. In a recent interview with Eurogamer's Robert Purchese, The Blood of Dawnwalkers director Konrad Tomaskiewicz once again confirmed that there is no main mission in the game. Instead, players have the single primary goal of saving their family, which Tomaskiewicz stated can technically be accomplished at any time:
“You know where you are [enemy is]. You can attack this location whenever you want. It's up to you if you want to do it yourself, or if you want to build yourself, find powerful items, develop your character or do some quests and find allies to help you do it.”
The Blood of Dawnwalkers approach to its main goal sounds very similar The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildpp. I Zelda: Breath of the Wildplayers are given the main goal of defeating Calamity Ganon in the heart of Hyrule Castle. This can technically be achieved at any time after players complete Breath of the Wilds prologue, although it will result in players encountering four additional versions of Ganon in a row. Instead, players are encouraged to complete each of the game's Divine Beasts, earn a few more heart containers, and grab the Master Sword before facing Ganon. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also has a non-linear structure where players can take on the final boss after completing the prologue.
Aside from this one central goal of saving Coen's family within the 30-day limit, The Blood of Dawnwalker will not contain any main quest. Instead, Rebel Wolves wants players to experience their own unique journey through the world, engaging with as much or as little of the game's content as they want in any order. By delivering this non-linear approach, Rebel Wolves hopes to create “their own area of the genre.”
