This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Saint. Figarland Garling is the Supreme Commander of the Holy Knights and one of the Five Elders of One Piece. Garling was promoted after Saturn was killed by Imu in the Egghead arc. At the time, it seemed that the promotion was well-deserved, as Garling was the champion of the God Valley.
The epithet indicated that Garling was the biggest winner of the God Valley Incident, which is one of the most important events in One Piece's history. Of course, One Piece fans were curious as to how Garling got the title. Fortunately, Oda revealed every detail of the God Valley Incident in Loki's flashback.
15 years later, Eiichiro Oda sets up the greatest revenge story in one piece
Oda has set up One Piece's biggest revenge story, and it all has to do with Blackbeard in One Piece.
Figarland Garling was not the true master of the God Valley
He barely did anything during the God Valley Incident
-
Garling was beaten by Xebec at God Valley

Garling probably got the title because he was popular
In the flashback, it was revealed that Garling fatally injured Shanks and Shamrock's mother. In addition to attacking his child's mother, Garling also hunted down the innocent people of God Valley. He murdered them in cold blood because he wanted to win the competition and claim Shakky as the prize.
Garling's only serious fight in God Valley came against Davy D. Xebec. Before the fight took place, readers expected Garling to put up a good fight against the pirate. But it ended pretty quickly with Xebec putting Garling through the twister. Garling's humiliating loss saw him fail at the very first hurdle, which was extremely shocking.
After being beaten, Garling did not fight anyone else. Instead, he reappeared when Xebec had already been beaten by Roger and Garp. He went with Maffey and Sommers to check on Xebec and landed the final blow on the pirate. With Xebec's death, the God Valley Incident came to an end. The World Government was humiliated by the pirates, so it decided to hide the truth.
Almost all evidence of God Valley's existence was erased, and the truth was fabricated. Garp was given full credit for stopping the transformed Xebec. Meanwhile, Garling was given the title of Champion of God Valley, although he barely made any worthwhile contribution.
Garling will be among the final villains in One Piece
As previously stated, Garling was promoted by Imu to the position of Gorosei, implying that they trust him. So Garling will definitely have an important role to play in the Final Saga of One Piece. Currently there hasn't been any sign of him getting involved in the Elbaf arc, so he'll either get involved in the next arc or maybe Oda will save him for the end. It is possible that Garling may have to fight Blackbeard at some point, as he was the one who landed the final blow on Xebec.
Blackbeard's relationship with his father is still unclear, but it seems that he plans to take revenge on anyone who wronged him. For example, he went after Ochoku, who betrayed the Rocks Pirates and delivered Shakky into the hands of the World Government. Blackbeard deposed Ochoku and took control of Hachinosu, a place visited by Xebec. The incident suggests that Blackbeard knows everything related to his father, or at least the important ones. Fans shouldn't be surprised by Blackbeard's knowledge of history, as Oda has revealed that the Yonko likes to do research. As Blackbeard goes through historical documents, he must also know his father's past.
Blackbeard is probably aware of Xebec's desire to take over the world. When Saturn asked Van Augur about the crew's plan, the latter replied that they wanted the world. At the time, it seemed that Blackbeard just wanted to be king of the world, but an important detail from Loki's flashback changed things. In the flashback, Xebec referred to Imu as the world itself. Connecting the dots, it becomes clear that Blackbeard wants to depose Imu and take over. However, Blackbeard will not make a decision in the blink of an eye. He is a calm and calculating man who only makes a decision after weighing the pros and cons. Hopefully Oda reveals Blackbeard's goals soon.
