Every Pokemon game challenges you to build a perfectly balanced team of six Pokemon to cover as many weaknesses as possible, and Pokemon Legends: ZA is no different. But before you can build a team of the most powerful and versatile Pokemon, it would help to know the best Pokemon of each type.
The best Water-type Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: ZA are hard to choose from among the strong Pokemon included in this Kalosian adventure, but a select few make it to the top. Whether you're a fan of pure water-types like Feraligatr or prefer dual-types like Greninja, these are the best water-type Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: ZA.
Blastoise
Blastoise is a great Water-type Pokemon choice and can be acquired very easily in the early stages of the game. Answer Mable's request via Side Mission 22: A Call From Mable and she'll offer you a choice of one of the three Canton starter Pokemon.
This blast from the past forces another starting choice just when we thought life had stopped offering cruel choices.
The biggest downside to picking Blastoise isn't even related to Blastoise's strength, but is instead a result of sacrificing your chance to get Charizard early in the game. Given Charizard's raw power and the flexibility to choose between two Mega Stones, it's hard to justify picking Squirtle for your eventual Blastoise.
Clawitzer
If you've struggled to find powerful Fighting-type Pokémon like Hawlucha, then Clawitzer is an excellent substitute that can also offer superb Water-type coverage.
Clawitzer's Alpha version can even appear in Wild Zone 11 from time to time, so you have the option to grab a special version of this powerful Pokemon if you want a strong one to test. If you're struggling to get a viable Fighting-type into your team, then Clawitzer is an excellent choice that can do double duty.
Gyarados
If you're looking for a strong Water-type Pokemon to join your team early on in your Kalosian adventure, look no further than an old favorite: Gyarados. Despite being functionally useless as a Magikarp, you'll earn your reward when this Pokémon evolves to level 20, offering you powerful Water, Flying, and Dark-type coverage options with its various moves.
In addition to Gyarados' impressive collection of moves to choose from, this Pokémon's impressive stat spread makes it an extremely competent attack and special attack option, depending on the type of opponent you're facing in battle.
Starmie
Tracking down a Staryu early on is an excellent idea, as you can evolve it into Starmie immediately, as long as you have a Water Stone handy to use.
If you are missing a water stone, go to the southern part of Lumiose City and go to the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue.
Starmie is an excellent Water- and Psychic-type option that can fill both roles well, although Starmie's move pool is predominantly full of Water-type moves.
Sharpedo
Sharpedo is another great Water-type Pokemon to add to your team in Pokemon Legends: ZA, especially if you can catch the Alpha version of this Pokemon in Wild Zone Ten. Sharpedo is a glass cannon that can easily decimate most Pokemon weak to water-like moves in a single hit.
Sadly, Sharpedo will fall apart from any hits that have its weaknesses as a Water and Dark type Pokemon, so you should deploy it carefully and try to stick to situations where it will shoot your opponent's Pokemon.
Slow bridge
Slowbro offers a more defensively oriented version of Starmie, as this Pokémon's special defense is easily its most appealing quality. However, despite Slowbro's penchant for survival, this Pokemon can still deal some serious damage with its Water and Psychic-type floating pool.
Moves like Psychic and Surf headline the options you can choose for Slowbro, giving this Pokemon a flexible move that can be adapted to your team composition.
Greninja
Once you secure a Froakie and put in the effort to evolve it, your reward will be a powerful Greninja, one of the most devastating Water-type Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: ZA. The extra effort to acquire Pokemon is somewhat annoying, but given that you can access the side quest from your earliest conversation with Emma, it's worth the time.
With a Froakie added to your team early, you'll quickly add a Greninja to your roster, which will offer you moves like Night Slash and Water Shuriken as its main forms of offense, offering little in the way of defensive help.
Feraligatr
Feraligatr is the best choice for your starting Pokemon and the best water type overall in Pokemon Legends: ZA, offering you an excellent combination of bulk and both Special Attack and Attacking moves for any situation.
Choosing Totodile/Feraligatr unfortunately means you don't get access to Chikorita or Tepig, but it's a sacrifice worth making.
While you don't strictly need a Feraligatr based on the fact that there are many other viable options, adding one of the game's strongest Water-type Pokémon to your team early on is a smart choice.
