A bit character whose reputation has changed drastically over the years

Summary

  • A bit Signs are slowly recontextualized over decades, revealing that repeatedly turning flip -notion.
  • Some prominent characters received heroism (such as Roger, USoppen or Franky), which made them much more popular.

  • Bartholomew Kuma and Rocks D. Xebec were originally introduced as antagonists, but their reputation changed drastically after their back stories were revealed.

With 1159 manga chapter and 1142 anime section it is safe to say that A bit is one of the longest fictional stories ever created. Since this series has been running for more than twenty -eight years, of course, a reputation for some of its most iconic named characters changes drastically with time.

Eiichiro Oda likes to write characters in a brilliant misleading way: Sometimes he introduces them as mysterious, scary or evil figures, just to reveal something important to them and/or make them do some impressive hundreds of chapters later, which completely shifts the fans' perception of said person. Of course this has happened many times during the series, with the following eight A bit Characters are the most notorious examples of this phenomenon.

Gol D. Roger

From mysterious historical figure to the heroic pirate captain

  • Debut:Chapter 1 (Manga) Section 1 (Anime)

Gol D. Rogerthe original pirate king and the person who started the action on their own A bitis a perfect example of a prominent character whose reputation changed drastically over the years. When he was introduced in the first chapter/section of the series, he was depicted as a mysterious and (literally) faceless figure with a little-to-no information about his backstory or personality.

This changed slowly when some lurks about his past and his relationships with other prominent pirates (such as Shiki or Whitebeard) were revealed around the MarineFord. But Roger's reputation changed more than ever in the middle of Wano Country Arc, when he was strongly included in Kouzuki Odens Flashback. This long and fascinating sequence revealed that he was actually a silly, lighter but incredibly powerful pirate captain who came very well with his herds, much in the same way as Monkey D. Luffy.

Wealthy

From lying coward to brave snike shooter

  • Debut:Chapter 23 (Manga) Section 8 (Anime)

Most seasoned A bit Fans will admit they didn't really like Wealthy when he was originally introduced. Not only is his introductory bow, the syrup village, notorious to be one of the weakest in the entire series, but his entire gimmick of being a silly cowardice that is constantly getting very old very fast to many fans.

USopp was still a relatively fun and pleasant character for most of the story, but the fan's perception of him changed drastically during the Water 7 Arc and Enie's Lobby Arc. In these two arches, the audience finally got to see a more serious, brave and safe side of USopp, with his fight against Luffy and the moment he burned down the world government flag as two of his most memorable and impressive moments. Even USopp's toughest critics have to admit that he became a really cool character under both of these bows and fortunately he had some other remarkable moments behind in subsequent arches, such as when defeated sugar in dress pink.

Smokers

From respected marine captain to someone who cannot keep up with the new world

  • Debut:Chapter 97 (Manga) Section 48 (Anime)

Unfortunately, not all of the character's reputation positively shifted, for Smokers is a solid example of someone who was much more popular back when he was first introduced. In the Loguetown and Arabasta -Bågen, smokers like this stern and severe marine captain with a heart of gold that were aware of the world's corruption were depicted and actively tried to change it from the inside. In addition, as the first Logia Devil Fruit user ever introduced to the series, he was able to make a fight and could confront powerful fighters like Ace, Luffy or Boa Hancock.

Unfortunately, all this changed after the time condition: despite being promoted to vice-admiral, and he learned to use Haki, smokers began to lose the fight after struggle, especially under the punk. Following his degrading defeat against teams, Caesar Clown, Vergo and Doflamingo, most A bit Fans saw him as a weaker who should never have gone to the new world. Still, it seems that smokers will have a prominent role in the near future, so it is possible that he will be stronger and regain his popularity soon.

Nico Robin

From murderous femme fatale to beloved member of the straw hats

  • Debut:Chapter 114 (Manga) Section 67 (Anime)

As many others loved A bit characters, Nico Robin Originally, was introduced as a villain, which obviously means that her reputation changed a lot over the years. Back when she was only known as Miss all Sunday, she was a highly ranked member of Baroque Works who apparently murdered Igaram in cold blood shortly after her debut. So, of course, most fans saw her as the harmful femme fatale she was originally depicted as.

But as she continued to show up in the entire Arabasta arch, Robin continued to prove that she was not as evil as it might seem, because she not only saved Luffy after Crocodile defeated him, but it was also revealed that she had not killed Igaram. She kept her mysterious and removing attitude even after she joined Straw Hat Pirates, but her possible role under the emotional enies lobby that finally, in combination with her tragic backstory, cemented her as an important fan favorite, and nowadays she is one of the most popular characters in A bit.

Bartholomew Kuma

From scary warlord to the sea to the best father in the series

  • Debut:Chapter 233 (Manga) Section 151 (Anime)

Bartholomew Kuma is no doubt A bit Character whose reputation has changed most over the years. After all, he was initially introduced as one of the sea's warlords (in the same way as characters as crocodile or doflamingo), he was known as “the tyrant of Sorbet's kingdom” and the combination of his cybernetic improvements and his bizarre devil fruit made him almost invincible. However, the audience began to see Kuma in another light as he saved the Kizaru straw hats in Sabaody Archipelago Arc.

Kuma's past, personality and motifs remained in mystery for a few decades, until him and his daughter, jewelry Bonney, became the stars in his own flashback sequence in the middle of the Egghead arch. This heartbreaking part of the story revealed that Kuma is actually a really kind and noble person who, despite everything he went through, was still willing to help others and that he eventually chose to sacrifice his humanity to save Bonney's life. In just a few chapters/sections, Kuma went from being a mysterious and scary pirate to becoming one of the most loved, tragic and admired the characters in the entire series.

Frany

From contemptible gangster to lovable cyborg

  • Debut:Chapter 329 (Manga) Section 233 (Anime)

Much in the same way as Nico Robin, Frany Originally, the story was introduced as an antagonist, except that his debut was even more controversial. After all, he was the leader of the Franny family, the gang of ships dismanters and bounty hunters who had beaten usproof and stole all their gold. Despite his really bizarre look, he acted as a hard -boiled criminal in most of Water 7 ARC and Enie's Lobby Arc, even after he decided to ally himself with the straw hats to defeat the agents of CP9.

Franky slowly warmed the straw hats as he spent more and more time with them, and he ended up releasing his “tough guy” facade almost completely around the time. Nowadays he acts almost exclusively as his true self: a silly, fun, charming and intelligent cyborg shipbuilding that is good with children but will still act persistently around his enemies. This personality change has made Frany extremely popular with fans and he has undoubtedly become one of the most beloved members of Straw Hat Pirates.

Doctor Vegapunk

From crazy scientists to silly geniuses who want to change the world

  • Debut:Chapter 1061 (Manga) Section 1090 (Anime)

For many decades many people (both in the universe and in the real world) continued on a mysterious scientist named Doctor Vegapunk who worked for the world government. Although not much was known about him, it was said that he is the mastermind behind some of the most important technical progress in A bit World, such as lifeless objects such as “ate” devil fruits, the Pacifista program, Seastone hull on the Marines pages, etc.

Most fans experienced Dr. Vegapunk as a ruthless, evil scientist who liked to work for the world government, until he finally debuted on the screen in Egghead Arc. It turns out that he is actually quite stupid and friendly, not to mention that he actually wants to give free energy to the whole world: he only continues to work for the world government because they are the only ones who can finance their ambitious research. In just one story Båge got Vegapunk many fans and definitely got its place as one of the most interesting A bit characters.

Rocks D. Xebec

From the most evil pirate in history to ambitious freedom fighter

  • Debut:Chapter 957 (Manga) Section 958 (Anime)

Rocks D. XebecOriginally, as the evil captain of the Rocks Pirates – the violent and ruthless pirate crew as notorious figures such as Big Mom, Kaido and Whitebeard were once a part of – and someone so powerful that it took the combined efforts from both Roger and Garp to take him down under Good Valley. Of course, most fans took this to nominal value and felt that stones were one of the most harmful characters in the history of the series for many years.

Still, the Manga readers finally got the chance to draw their own conclusions about stones in the latest Elbaf arch, as he is the star in an extensive flashback sequence that is still published at the time of writing. Much to the fans' surprise, this flashback has revealed that, despite his violent tendencies and ruthless personality, stones actually cared for and respected his friends and his family not to mention that he was aware of IMU's existence and he tried to take down the world government. Of course it is still possible that he actually did something at some point that made him get his university performance, but it is safe to say that A bit Fans see Rocks D. Xebec in a completely different light now.
