Tsugikuni revolutionized Demon Slayer Corps

  • Manga debut: Chapter 81
  • Anime debut: Section 8

Yoriichi Tsugikuni was born with Demon Slayer Mark in the Sengoku era. He was a naturally talented swordman who could perform incredible feats from the day he picked up the sword. His unmatched talent helped him make a name for himself, and he eventually stopped joining Demon Slayer Corps.

My dream was to live a quiet life with my family in a small house where we would sleep side by side. I would be close enough to see the beloved faces on my wife and children and close enough to extend and take my hands. That would have been enough. But even that did not come true. Demons are found in this beautiful world. ~ Yoriichi Tsugikuni

Tsugikuni continued to revolutionize the ancient organization by inventing sunbathing. This ended up becoming the drawing for the creation of other sword styles that favored Demon Slayer Corps tremendously. As if this performance alone was not impressive enough, Yoriichi also helped other swords to wake their demon -layer brand and started the golden age of the demon.

While it can be imagined that Tsugikuni's progress would justify more screentime, unfortunately, it never happens. Although Yoriichi had so much to offer as a character, his potential is never really depth in the story.

The tragic hero could have added more depth to the story

Yoriichi Tsugikuni is the only demon that has ever lived that has fought Kokushibo and Muzan alone, overwhelming both without breaking sweat. He was so overwhelmed that he forced Kibutsuji to run for his life and made the upper moon feel like a beginner. But even though he pulled off such incredible feats, his journey barely received the attention it deserved.

These are arguably the best demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba section so far.

It is sad that almost nothing is known about the swords he inspired and how he actually turned into an overwhelming legend whose strength even echoes to the Taisho era many centuries later. While the Infinity Castle Arc is set to illuminate his life, judge from manganese, his story will not get much screentime. Although producers take creative freedoms, Yoriichi is very unlikely to be the focus for more than a few short moments in the last battle.

This is tragic because the viewers could have experienced the magical Sengooku era, during which Yoriichi tipped the battle between good and evil to the benefit of humanity and pressed demons to the border with extinction. Unfortunately, fans will never enjoy the greatness of the era that has shaped modern swords. Furthermore, since respiratory styles were Tsugikuni's invention, much of their history will remain enforced in mystery forever as a result of the legendary sword man.

What is the value of a life for you? ~ Yoriichi tsugikuni to muzan kibutsuji

But perhaps the biggest tragedy with all this is that fans will never see Yoriichi's real potential as a sword man. His fight with demons from his era is usually never even mentioned. Unfortunately, his confrontation with Muzan and Kokushibo was also short, which means that moments to catch Tsugikuni that will best be short.

The story just stood to win by digging deeper into his past and exploring his journey in a little more detail. But eventually Yoriichi's part of the story seems to be just a passing comment instead of the epic foundation it should have been. By not taking advantage of his potential as a great character, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba It was not possible to do justice against Tsugkuni's legacy and, thus, also let the fans.

The first part of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Trilogy Is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 12, 2025.
