Rare Permanent has been canceled, according to a new report that quotes industry sources. The game's cancellation is possibly related to the latest termination round at Microsoft, which hits Permanent developer.
November 14 will highlight the sixth anniversary to Permanent Announcement, which was materialized during the X0 fair in London. Rare's descriptions of the game have changed over time and created uncertainty as to whether Permanent is an action adventure title, a survival game or a life swim with similarities to the iconic of the studio Viva piñata series.

Insider addresses Rare's Everwild game
A remarkable leaker provides an update on the development of Everwild, the upcoming game from Rare that has been bright for several years.
After over a decade's development, Permanent has been canceled, reports VGC, with reference to sources that are familiar with the matter. The cancellation is said to be connected to the latest round of layoffs on Microsoft. Officially announced on July 2, the cuts will affect as many as 9,000 employees, or about 0.4% of the company's labor force. Rare – which Microsoft acquired in 2002 – is said to be among the studios affected by the restructuring, according to the same source.
Rare has not released a new game in half a decade
The latest game rare was involved in was 2020 Beat-EM-Up Battle. But it only played a supportive role on that project, with Dlala Studios that led the development. The latest game helped by Rare was 2018 Live Service Pirate Adventure Thieves Sea. Permanent Was placed as a prestige title for Rare's modern era, but the company reportedly struggled to settle on a game loop for it. According to a previous report from VGC, Permanent Was restarted in 2021 and returned to square one in terms of design. Gregg Mayles – a rare veteran with 32 game development credits for his name – was reportedly appointed to lead the project at that time.
Microsoft claimed that Everwild made progress just a few months ago
Microsoft claimed Permanent Made progress as late as February 2025. “It's nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress they make,” said Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer about its latest rare studio visit at that time. While he acknowledged it Permanent Had long come to the conclusion, he noted that Microsoft's ability to develop teams is good.
But time seems to have ended for Permanent. The exact cost of the project remains unclear, but with development that begins as early as 2014 and rare, a staff of over 200 maintained during that time was probably significant. How the British studio will move itself afterPermanent remains to be seen. For now, Thieves Sea Continues to perform well after its latest expansion of several platforms-men's long-term direction remains uncertain.
