Kanao Tsuyuri's character development so far

Kanao has undergone a great deal of ups and downs in his life

  • Manga debut: Chapter 6
  • Anime debut: Section 4

Many years before the events in the main history, Canao Tsuyuri was born to neglecting parents who showed no concern for her or her siblings. As she grew up in a poor area, she endured unthinkable horror that turned her into a calm and emotional child. As if this abuse was already bad enough, her parents had the courage to sell her to slavery. At this point, Kanao had endured so much psychological and physical abuse that she could no longer process grief.

Somehow I know the people I care about and those who are important to me will still live tomorrow. But that's just my hope and there is no way I can promise it with any certainty. Why do people think … such things? ~ Kanao Tsuyuri

Fortunately, when the man who bought her took her home, Kanae and Shinobu noticed that the weak and barefoot girl is drawn. The Kocho sisters not only stood up for her, but also helped Kanao escape the life of slavery by fooling the corrupt man. Although she had been liberated and now had a much better life in front of her, the influence of the abuse she had endured was quite debilitating. Kanao no longer had the psychological desire or understanding of making his own decisions.

At Butterfly Mansion, she eventually leaned towards becoming a demon layer instead of helping with the chores or learning how to do drugs. She observed Kanae carefully and learned to flower breathing. Kanao then went ahead and cleaned the final selection without ever asking for anyone's permission. It seems that after she was liberated, Kanao slowly developed some capacity to make her own decisions.

But when she met Tanjiro, Kanao still relied on a coin to make most of her life choices. Even her conversation was robotic and seemed repeated. But as mentioned earlier, Kanao had already made some progress. After her conversation with Tanjiro, she begins to rely less on her coin and becomes even more independent.

Kanao Tsuyuri's character development can be painfully slow when seen from the angle of history's chronological development. But since viewers learn about it in a short flashback, her struggle is somewhat trivialized and overshadowed by other characters' back stories.

Did the Kanao get the spotlight too late in the series?

Kanao Tsuyuri obviously did not get the screen time that many of her fans would have wanted. But when she looks at her character development and her past life, it makes sense why that is the case. Ever since Kamado joined Demon Slayer Corps, he has participated in assignments with high efforts. Some of them included fighting the upper moons in the twelve Kizuki. Getting the spotlight would have meant Kanao to fight against these intense battles that required decision-making for split-second and accept unthinkable loss as part of the job.

Some are loved. Some are designed. These are the most controversial characters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -Franchise.

But even in the rehabilitation training arch, Kanao was still hopelessly dependent on a coin to make basic decisions in life. While she was undoubtedly a strong fighting, skill alone meant a lot when deep psychological scars from the past were still haunting her. As a character, Kanao needed to be given enough time to develop and overcome her abusive past. Koyoharu Gotouge seems to have known it and made the smart decision to keep her as a background character for most of the series. This made Kanao's backstory more credible.

It would have been absurd if Tsuyuri went from turning a coin to make basic life decisions to fighting an upper moon within an arc. So that she eventually gets the limelight in Infinity Castle Arc feels quite natural because she has undergone psychological and emotional growth in the background- even before the events in the main history.

I wanted to protect her. I wanted to risk my life for her. I wanted to go home together.

Kanao learns to make her decisions, then slowly grow a deeply rooted hatred of the demons to hurt people she loved, to eventually use all negative energy to fight a struggle with her life on the line is a slow but important process in her character development. Therefore, Kanao Tsuyuri does not get the limelight until Infinity Castle Arc is not just a bad thing, but it makes her character more credible and realistic.
