While the anime world is huge, there are hardly any characters that have disabilities. The industry is slowly making changes to include more characters with them, but it may take some time before they are regularly seen. It is even rare to see characters that are deaf, but anime -show and movies such as Ranking of kings and A silent voice have proven that it can be successful.

There are very few deaf characters in the anime world and even fewer who have had a major impact. However, these characters show that just because they cannot hear it does not mean that they are not strong. They do not let their hearing impaired prevent them from showing how strong they are or show kindness to others who have not been kind to them.

For example, the Winter 2025 Anime season includes no shows that cover this concept/theme, and the same can be said for the autumn of 2024 and almost all other seasonal settings. There are still some anime that not only introduces deaf characters but focus specifically on them.

A silent voice is deliberately difficult to look at sometimes, with the opening half with a focus on bullying and the lasting impact that these measures can have on both the victims and the perpetrator. Shoko goes to a new elementary school and is bullied by most of the class, especially a boy named Shoya. Her deafness makes her a simple goal as she struggles to communicate and get in touch with others, even though she wants to hit a band with her classmates. She is reduced to her disability by the other students, and then they blame her and only Shoya to get out of feeling any responsibility for their actions.
As Shoko gets older, she becomes much more self -hating and shows traces of depression and suicidal thoughts that derive from her insulation. She begins to blame herself for situations that were beyond her control, especially when she develops feelings for Shoya after seeing his attempt to correct her past errors. Shoko could easily have encountered as an one-ton character or a device to drive Shoya's growth, but she is a well-defined figure that carries the emotional heart of history.

Yuki Is a shy 19-year-old girl with congenital hearing loss. Although she carries hearing aids, she uses sign language to talk and lip reading and text messages to understand what others say. Despite his shy nature, Yuki goes to a public university at the request of her mother. She struggled to adapt at first, but she has made some friends from it.

This little but mighty hero proves that an anime can have a deaf protagonist and be successful. Because of his small size and being deaf, many believe Bojji Is not appropriate to control the kingdom and for his half brother to take the throne. Bojji does not let this affect him and still dreams of being a great king as his father. He is known for being kind, and he can read lips, so he knows what people say. He is hard working, intelligent and empathetic and would have made a great king.
But many in the kingdom believe that he is stupid and voted to make his brother be king because of his disability. Although he was heartbroken, Bojji did not let this prevent him from going on a journey to prove his value. He proved that he is more than suitable to be king and is much stronger than he looks.
He proved his strength for everyone in the last battle and defeated his father in the last battle. He does not do what he lacks in physical strength with his speed and tactics. Had his father not taken his strength at birth, it would have been doubtful that Bojji would be the next king. However, Bojji showed that he could do the job even though he lacked strength and his disability.

This is a man who definitely does not let his hearing obstacles stop him from being a “craft” for the mob. While most characters would see their disability as an inconvenience and apologize to other people, Nicolas Make it clear that he finds the people he talks with an inconvenience not to know sign language. He hates having to accommodate others who can't sign for him, although he can read lips.
After growing up in a rough environment, Nicholas usually keep to himself and come out as secluded, even the closest to him. He gets easily annoyed, but he is not a terrible guy. Nicolas does small actions like kindness like playing Nina and helping Alex, and will sometimes choose others with a dark but good humor.

Hyakkimaru Had the accident of being born to a gentleman who had made an agreement with demons. In return for the safety of their country, Hyakkimarus's body parts were given them. As a result, he had no skin, eyes, nose, arms, legs or ears. Fortunately, he was rescued by Julai, who became his father figure and made new body parts for him. Although he could not hear, Hyakkimar's soul vision and telepathy abilities were more than enough for him to see and hear others.

The young cousin to Yakumo. NAO Has been deaf since birth and lives with his adoptive father, Isshin, at a Buddhist temple. Although she cannot hear, NAO has the special ability to feel the feelings of everyone around her. She is also one of the very few people that Yakumo feels comfortable because many have made fun of him because of his eye.
After Isshin has passed away, NAO is taken in by Kazutoshi (one of the main characters) and his wife. Since he and his wife Attsuko could not have children, they drove apart, but Nao helped to cook their relationship and the three became a loving family.
