ZA's season 7 is already the worst ever (and I'm talking about the entire franchise)

Pokemon Legends: ZA has been my favorite game since it came out, and while it's far from perfect, I still like it a lot for several reasons. One of them is shiny hunting, probably the boss of the bunch, since I was able to get shiny Latios, Latias, Cobalion, Virizion and Terrakion for the first time in my history with the franchise. Pokemon Legends: ZAs ranked battles are nothing to scoff at though, and I've loved ranking on the ladder in real-time matches with plenty of training options available since launch. Season 7 is officially here though, and it's one of the worst things I've ever experienced Pokémon.

One could argue that Pokemon Legends: ZAs approach to battles is not suitable for VGC. Nevertheless, the game still has a fairly active competitive scene, with users hosting tournaments regularly. It is very different from regular competitions PokémonHowever, since the battles are not only real-time rather than turn-based, but the teams consist of three Pokémon each and have different rulesets compared to official rules for Pokemon Scarlet and Violetfor example. Unfortunately, Season 7 may have the worst ruleset I've ever seen in the franchise at large, and it can only get worse from here.

Pokemon Legends: ZA Home Support is getting an update

Pokemon Legends: ZA's new season just started making headlines regarding its Pokemon Home compatibility, and things could get even better on Pokemon Day.

Pokemon Legends: ZA breaks a massive competitive team building rule

If you need the rewards, such as all kinds of special Poke Balls, Poke Dollars and the like, you can play ranked battles in Legends: ZA is very worth it. Even more so if you're looking to score the exclusive Mega Stones Pokemon Legends: ZAincluding Blaziken's, which is available for the first time in Season 7. Meanwhile, the competitive meta is now very frustrating and very similar, as the ruleset not only allows for all critters in the Pokedex, but also allows everyone to use up to two limited Pokémon. These are:

  • Xerneas

  • Yveltal

  • Zygarde

  • Mewtwo

  • Kyogre

  • Groudon

  • Rayquaza

IN Pokemon Legends: ZAIn Season 6, these were limited to one per team, which made the selection more difficult, as the best picks were still dependent on team composition and what other players were using. The ruleset still allowed players to use up to three Legendary or Mythical Pokémon at once, but the absolute strongest in the game were limited to just one per team. Although Xerneas and Kyogre dominated most matches, you could build teams to counter them and still have fun.

My best team in Pokemon Legends: ZA last season was Overqwil, Rotom Mow and Swampert. In season 7 I still use Overqwil and Rotom Mow to counter Xerneas, Mewtwo, Kyogre and Groudon.

How Legends: ZA's limited Pokémon are ruining the game

Now, however, each team can enter three legendary and mythic Pokémon Legends: ZA while using two limited mons, which usually translates to very unfunny and repetitive team compositions, all with a combination of Xerneas, Mewtwo, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza, with sidemons like Genesect, Darkrai, Magearna, etc. This is the first time in the franchise where you can use an entire team of legendary/mythic results that includes two limited Pomons, terrible. You can still try not to use Legendaries and Mythicals, but it's very hard to get wins with fun, creative sets like Focus Energy + Scope Lens Kangaskhan as opposed to spamming Life Orb, Focus Sash, and Expert Belt on OP Pokemon like Xerneas and Kyogre.

  • Rayquaza is almost an automatic inclusion in most teams as well, like Mega Rayquaza i Legends: ZA doesn't require held items to Mega Evolve, so it can easily use Focus Sash to be more durable.

  • Geomancy Xerneas with Life Orb can decimate most metathreats even without super effective hits, and it's very durable.

  • Kyogre has access to his Primal version, but the base form is still a great choice due to its massive move coverage and incredible stats.

  • Groudon has become one of the most used Ground-type Pokémon, to the point that Garchomp is rarely seen.

I never even thought there would be a time when I would miss out on a Garchomp meta Pokemon Legends: ZAand yet, here we are. I rarely even see Ice-type Pokemon now, since Rayquaza is mostly Sashed, so there's not much to gain from using Ice-types to break Sash. Any movement can do it. But most of all, I really hate how the game now lacks most of the “standard” Pokemon, as their meta status has been lost and restricted Pokemon are everywhere. Season 8 could be even worse, perhaps allowing any number of limited Pokemon, but that remains to be seen. Still, Season 7 is arguably the lowest point in the franchise for competition, allowing players to forget that most common Pokemon exist, and becoming a stale battle among legendaries.
