Multiple buses' Rhea Seehorn didn't come out of nowhere. Prior to her role as Carol Sturka in the popular Apple TV series, she starred alongside Bob Odenkirk as Kim Wexler in Best to call Saul—a role that even Odenkirk has said deserved as much recognition as his, titular protagonist Saul Goodman. Before her breakout role in Best to call Saulthe actress appeared in several TV series, with some of her most prominent roles Whitney and I'm with her. But even earlier than her appearance on the one-season show I'm with herwhich aired from 2003-2004, saw Seehorn book his first credited role, not in a TV series, but in a video game.
In the late 1990s, when PC games were experimenting with live-action movies and strange hybrids of media, Multiple buses star appeared in a project that now feels almost impossible to connect to her modern career. In fact, since Seehorn's appearance in this particular video game, she has not been involved in any other gaming projects. It's the kind of look that actually sounds a little contrived until it's witnessed firsthand, but once it is, it becomes one of those trivia that shows just how far her journey in acting really goes.
Every Magic: The Gathering Crossover Series, Ranked
Magic: The Gathering has featured crossover series with tons of iconic franchises, and they all have their highlights, some more than others.
Rhea Seehorn's first credited role was in 1997's Magic: The Gathering on PC
1997, Multiple busesRhea Seehorn received her first credited role as the tutorial Sorceress in Magic: The Gathering PC games. In a 20+ minute long video, Seehorn and Regi Davis played Sorceress and Sorcerer respectively, walking players through the mechanics of the card game in its new digital format. The video can be viewed on YouTube today, although its low resolution makes the finest details of Seehorn's likeness difficult to discern. But even though it's now almost three decades ago, it still sounds very much like Seehorn's iconic voice, just with a bit more pep than what Kim Wexler and Carol Sturka are known for.
While IMDb confirms her role as Sorceress in the 1997s Magic: The Gathering on PC, the actress appeared on a recent episode of NPR Podcasts, where she explained the role in detail. Along with panelists Josh Gondelman, Hari Kondabolu and Paula Poundstone during the episode, Multiple buses the star gave all her time as the tutorial Sorceress in Magic: The Gathering.
“It was a very early job,” Seehorn said. “In the original game, it was the software in the card game, and it came with a tutorial that would be like a tiny little window on the screen about how to navigate through the game. Me and an actor named Regi, we played Sorcerer and Sorceress, and it was so low budget that they didn't have shoes, but they wanted us to look like we were wearing wizards only we were wearing wizards. Socks with electrical tape all over.”
While the role feels more like an ironic footnote or novelty now, because Best to call Sauls Rhea Seehorn at the time, it was the kind of work she needed to jumpstart her career. It may have been a small win, but to her it probably felt huge, as she likely did whatever she could just to get her foot in the door – and that's important in an industry where nothing is guaranteed and every single credit counts. In fact, just her excitement about booking the role after all this time shows how much it meant to her, despite the light humor that accompanies it today.
“I was so excited that my photo was on the back [of the box] that I went to Best Buy, and I couldn't afford whatever the game was at the time,” Seehorn said. “So I showed them the picture on the back, and I was like, 'This is me! I did! Can you give me a copy? And they said, 'No. What's wrong with you?”
It's a fun story now, but looking back at the grainy tutorial videos from Magic: The Gatheringit's incredible to see how far Seehorn has come since then. It may have taken nearly 30 years and a commitment to a breakout role alongside one of TV's most iconic characters, but she's now leading another masterpiece of Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan i Multiple buses. That kind of journey just goes to show how small beginnings should never be despised, because even the most unlikely first steps can still lead to success.
