Luffy's iconic straw hat is the symbol of One Piece. Behind the simple headdress lies a great deal of symbolism, adventure and dreams. As Luffy has said many times before, his straw hat is his greatest treasure, something that is equally true for fans of the series as well. In many ways the straw hat represents One Piece as a whole.
But despite being so personal to Luffy, many fans have wondered what Luffy's plans are for the Straw Hat One Piece. Although the Straw Hat holds so much personal value to Luffy, many believe that Luffy will give his hat to a future generation of pirates, the same way he was given the hat as a child. Potentially, Luffy could ignite a whole new generation of pirates, all by simply handing over a hat that was once passed down to him.

Even when Luffy was a child, after being rescued by the pirate Shanks, the Red Hair Pirate gave Luffy his iconic straw hat with the requirement that Luffy return it when he becomes a great pirate. However, the straw hat itself has a lot of history in the world One Piece. The hat itself was originally worn by Gol D. Roger himself, who then passed it on to Shanks, and in turn to Luffy. This hat bears a kind of generational will from the great pirates of each generation, and serves as a unifying symbol that each of them has. Additionally, the mysterious Joy Boy would also wear a straw hat, adding to the hat's overall significance.

Based on this trend, it would be easy to assume that Luffy would eventually pass on the Straw Hat as well. In many ways, Luffy takes after the original Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, especially in terms of personality and story arcs. After he achieves his goal of finding the One Piece and becoming the Pirate King, he may also consider handing over the Straw Hat just like Roger did before.

While there is no young member to pass the hat to the Straw Hat Crew as it currently stands, there are a few potential characters that Luffy could pass his hat on to for the future. One Piece. Mainly, Luffy can send the Straw Hat to Jewelry Bonney. She resembles Luffy in many ways, even going so far as to also be a potential representation of the sun god Nika. Seeing Luffy hand over his hat to the much younger pirate would be a sweet moment mirroring his moment with Shanks so long ago.

On the other hand, as it currently stands, Luffy is much younger than Shanks was when he handed over the Straw Hat, meaning Luffy gets to keep it even if he becomes One Piece's The Pirate King. Right now, Luffy doesn't have to pass his hat to the next generation because he's still the newest generation in the show. For Luffy to seriously consider giving away the Straw Hat, jump in another time One Piece may have to occur. Although it seems a bit far-fetched, there is always a possibility that this could happen.

Ultimately, although it seems likely that Luffy will pass on the Straw Hat in the future, at his current age, even if he becomes the Pirate King in One Piecehe may not want to part with the hat just yet. But if he does part with the hat, it would make for a great scene that could serve as the cherry on top of the entire series. Over time, a moment like this can become the best scene in the series, giving the whole One Piece story full circle.
