Wild line shows how far Australia has come

There was a heartwarming show of support in a Sydney shopping center this morning that shows just how far women’s sport has come in Australia.

Fans queued for hours at a Big W store at Westfield Eastgardens in Sydney’s south-east to meet and have their books signed by Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper, known for his extraordinary saves on the pitch, revealed in March that he will publish five books this year, which will include a children’s series and a memoir.

The popular children’s book series is about her as a child and follows her on fun soccer adventures.

Fans could be seen lying on the floor of the Big W and many of them had brought their own chairs to wait to see the famous footballer.

After announcing the release date of the children’s book on its social media channels, fans also eagerly jumped at the opportunity to pre-order copies.

“I’m not a kid but I will buy,” one person commented.

“100 percent would read and I’m a 37-year-old woman,” said another.

“Are they just for kids? Asking for a friend,” a third person wrote.

Huge lines line up for Mackenzie Arnold's book signing

This comes as former Matildas coach Ante Milicic said he believes the Matildas now “bring Australian football”.

“They’ve changed Australian football, they kind of carry it on their shoulders and I couldn’t be prouder of the direction they’ve taken,” he said.

Viewership numbers for women’s sport have soared as Matilda mania sweeps the nation, with audiences tuning in in droves to witness electrifying performances from Australia’s beloved women’s football team.

From thrilling victories to breathtaking clashes, the Matildas’ journey onto the pitch has captivated viewers nationwide, cementing their status as sporting icons.

While the Matildas were eliminated from their match against England during the 2023 FIFA World Cup, over 43% of the Australian population tuned in to watch the match, with statistics showing that 11.15 million Australians watched the 90 minutes of play.

It’s not just the beloved goalkeeper who’s been making headlines off the pitch lately.

Matilda sensation Mary Fowler also made headlines last month after announcing the imminent release of a Barbie “Fowler” doll, following her eye-catching performance during the 2023 Women’s World Cup

Fowler is among eight other female sports stars who will have dolls modeled after them to honor their sporting achievements.

Her Barbie is complete with the iconic black gloves Fowler wears and bubble braid.

“When I saw myself as Barbie for the first time, it was crazy; Honestly, I was a little speechless. I never thought I’d have a Barbie that looked like me,” Fowler said.

“I’m just very grateful and honored to be a part of this.”

Arnold’s first two children’s books “Finders Keepers” and “Caught in the Act” will be available July 2, 2024.
